Editor’s Note45 years agoJanuary 1967 — A picture on the front cover showed Tpr. J.N. Taylor,Troop D, accepting a Citation of Merit from Governor Warren E.Hearnes. Tpr. Taylor was recognized for his part in the apprehensionof three armed men who held up the Bank of Fordland.35 years agoFebruary 1977 — Articles announced both the retirement of Col.Sam S. Smith and the appointment of Col. Al Lubker. The centerfoldshowed photos from the 1977 gubernatorial detail.25 years agoJanuary 1987 — Tpr. R.F. Wolf, Troop C, arrived at a traffic crash onMissouri Highway 47 in Franklin County. A Union, MO, firefighter wason the scene and had called for an ambulance. By the time Tpr. Wolfarrived, the ambulance had left. The firefighter told him there was onlyone occupant, and that she was probably drunk. Tpr. Wolf then droveto the hospital and inquired about the traffic crash victim. Hospital personneldirected him to an examination room, where he found a middleagedwoman. She didn’t appear injured, so Tpr. Wolf asked the womanwhy she’d been brought in an ambulance. The lady said, “I’ve got abroken heart.”15 years agoFebruary 1997 — After a rest area attendant located a purse left in theladies restroom, she called the Patrol. Tpr. Brad L. Spicer respondedand took possession of the purse, which was found to have morethan $1,850 and numerous credit cards inside. Tpr. Spicer contactedthe owner, who lived in Texas, and made arrangements to return thepurse. About a month later, the purse owner sent a money order for$400 made out to the rest area attendant and asked that Tpr. Spicerdeliver it. Tpr. Spicer arranged for a Highway Patrol Certificate of Appreciation,also. He presented both at a press conference at the touristcenter.5 years agoJanuary/February 2007 — The Department of Public Safety namedTpr. Keith A. Kinsey, Q/GD, DPS Employee of the Month for November2006. The story appeared in this issue, and explained that Tpr. Kinsey’sinvestigative skills solved three cases in a month’s time. The firstcase involved a methamphetamine laboratory in a casino hotel room.The second case included stolen money a subject was attempting to“launder” at the casino. The third investigation revealed a check cashingscam.I would like to take this opportunityto thank everyone who contributedarticles to the Patrol Newsthis past year. Patrolling The KitchenSpaghetti Supper, Toys Brighten HolidaysBy Sgt. Collin M. Stosberg, Troop AOn Friday, December 16, 2011,Missouri and Kansas state trooperscooked a tasty spaghetti dinner forthe temporary residents of the RonaldMcDonald House in Kansas City, MO.Families stay at the house while theirchildren undergo medical treatment inthe KC area—sometimes for monthsat a time. Approximately 80 peopleenjoyed spaghetti that evening. Thetroopers, their families, and other Patrolemployees helped with this event.The spaghetti supper was anextension of the 9th Annual TrooperMichael Newton ToyDrive. It’s the first yearthe group provided ameal in conjunctionwith delivering toys.Tpr. Newton’s parents,Bobbie and Garry, andhis son, Tyler, 13, werethere and did a lot ofthe cooking. The volunteersalso distributedthe toys they’d collectedduring the toy drive tothe kids in the house. Itwas a very heartwarmingexperience, andthe Ronald McDonaldHouse welcomed theextra effort. CEO Holly Buckendahlwas very appreciative and impressedwith the effort this year.The group also delivers toys tochildren at Children’s Mercy Hospitaland the Kansas University MedicalCenter. This annual event is the resultof the efforts of the Missouri StateHighway Patrol Troop A, KansasHighway Patrol, and Krispy KremeDoughnuts. It was a great cause anda great way to remember our trooper,Michael L. Mike Newton, who gavethe ultimate sacrifice.A sign greeted thegroup that arrivedto cook and delivertoys.
