Introduction and WarrantyPaslode Cordless 16 Gauge StraightFinish Nailer Operating ManualThis manual is intended to acquaint you with the PaslodeCordless 16 ga. Straight Finish Nailer. Unlike other powerfastening tools, the Cordless Finish Nailer is powered by aninternal combustion linear motor. In simpler terms, yourCordless Finish Nailer is powered by a motor similar to theone that powers an automobile. The Cordless Finish Nailerignites a fuel and air mixture to produce the energy to drivethe motor, which in turn drives the fastener. The CordlessFinish Nailer is totally self-contained. It carries its own fuelsupply and battery, along with a supply of fasteners.For ease of use, this manual is divided into sections (seeContents). Each section of the manual is written with you,the tool operator, in mind. We have left out many of thetechnical terms so that you can easily understand how to getthe maximum performance from your Cordless Finish Nailer,and how to avoid damaging the tool or injuring yourself. But,to accomplish this, we need you to do two things:The Cordless Finish Nailer should be handled like otherpower fastening tools that you use. Battery and Charging SystemBattery and Charging SystemThe Paslode Cordless tools come with a rechargeablebattery and its own charging system. Thischarging system is the only one that will work withthe Paslode batteries (either round or oval ). The firststep in preparing a new tool for operation is to fullycharge the battery. New batteries are shippeddischarged and must be charged prior to firstuse. Batteries will take 5 minutes to 2 hours (timewill be dependant on the amount of discharge of thebattery) to recharge.Important Charging NotesWarningCHEMICAL/EXPLOSIONHAZARDRead ALL instructions beforecharging or using battery.Failure to follow ALLinstructions may result infire, severe burns, or releaseof toxic materials.Battery Disposal:The Paslode batteries contain cadmium and must berecycled or disposed of properly. You may contact your localrecycling center for information on where to return thespent battery or call 1-800-822-8837 for information onNi-Cd battery recycling in your area.Wall Mount UnitREAR VIEW OFCHARGER BASEPlug ReceptacleCharger BaseCharging Instructions1. Remove wall mount unit with the orange label fromthe tool case and plug into a 120V AC outlet. Setorange charger on a stable surface and insert wallmount unit’s plug into plug receptacle on the back ofthe charger (see picture). A green light indicatespower is on and charger circuit is ready.2. Remove the battery from tool or case and insertterminals down into charger. The red light will comeon indicating that the battery is charging and thegreen light will go out.NOTEIf battery is completely discharged, the red light andthe green light may flash back and forth for up to20 minutes. This safety feature slowly recharges thebattery until it is ready to accept the full chargingcurrent. If the red and green lights continue toflash after 20 minutes, replace the battery.3. After charging is complete, the red light will go outand the green light will come on, indicating that thebattery is fully charged. The charger will keep thebattery at full charge until it is removed.4. Unplug the wall mount unit from the charger andremove the wall mount unit from the 120V AC outlet.CHARGING TIMES:First charge (new battery) 2 hoursDischarged Battery 5 minutes to 2 hoursCHARGING DON'TS:1. Battery and Charging SystemBattery Indicator LightOn the right side of the handle is a small plastic lens. Thisis the battery indicator light. When you insert a fully-chargedbattery into the tool, you will see a blinking green light. If theindicator light blinks red, recharge the battery.BATTERY INDICATOR LIGHTInserting Battery1. Load the battery, contacts first, into the Cordless FinishNailer.2. Push battery fully forward into its locked position.3. To remove battery, push down on locking tab and slidebattery out.NOTE: If battery is left in tool for an extended period, thebattery will discharge completely and will require recharging.IMPORTANT: Should your battery terminals becomecorroded and cause poor electrical contact, clean theterminals using a soft cloth.Clean thecontacts9

Fuel Cell and Metering ValveFuel CellDANGEREXPLOS ION/FI R EHAZARDRead ALL safetyinstructions before usingor handling the fuel cell.Failure to follow ALLinstructions may result inexplosion or fire. This maycause severe personalinjuries or propertydamage.Keep the fuel cell awayfrom heat, sparks andopen flame.Exposure to temperaturesabove 120°F (49°C) maycause the fuel cell to burst,releasing flammable gas.There is a second container inside the fuel cell. The innercontainer holds the fuel. The space between the innercontainer and the outer cylinder is filled with a gas, called thepropellant, which is under pressure.To eject the fuel, propellant pressure squeezes the innerfuel container, much as you squeeze a tube of toothpaste.This squeezing action ensures that all the fuel is used, andthat the Cordless Finish Nailer can operate in any position.Because of this container-within-a-container design, youmight hear the sound of fluid when shaking the fuel cell afterall the fuel has been used. This is the propellant, whichremains between the containers even after all the fuel hasbeen expelled.If you expose the empty fuel cell to extreme temperatures,the propellant gas will expand and could cause the containerto burst, releasing flammable gases.Metering ValveThe metering valve contains a fuel metering system to injectthe correct amount of fuel into the combustion chamber.The metering valve with the yellow face is the only valvethat will operate properly with the Cordless 16 ga. StraightFinish Nailer.YELLOWFACEWARNINGSunlight can raise the inside temperature of anunventilated car or van to above 140°F (60°C).Never puncture or attempt to open the fuel cell; it isnon-refillable.Never incinerate, reclaim or recycle the fuel cell.Never smoke while installing or operating the meteringvalve.Never inhale the spray.Keep out of the reach of children.Store fuel cell(s) in well-ventilated areas only.NOTE1. Do not attempt to reuse the metering valve!Replace with fresh fuel cell/valve, and dispose ofspent cell/valve properly.2. When replacing fuel cell also clean the air filter foroptimum tool operation.NOTE: Altitude RestrictionPaslode Cordless technology is powered by aninternal combustion engine and is effected byaltitude. The tool may lose power or not cycleconsistently at elevations of 4000 feet or greater.When using the tool at elevations of 4000 feet itis recommended to use the blue high altitudefuel metering valve part #219247.10

Fuel Cell and Metering ValveInstalling Metering Valve to Fuel Cell Prior to UseTo install the metering valve to a fuel cell:1. Press downward on the front side of the valve (stem side) until it seats.2. Press downward on the rear side of the valve until it seats.3. The valve is now completely seated onto the fuel cell and can be inserted into the tool.1.2.3.NOTE:Paslode Cordless Fuel Cells are marked with an expiration date on the bottom of the cell.For maximum performance use fuel before expiration date.DANGERPaslode Cordless Fuel Cells are flammable.Do not smoke when installing the metering valve!Paslode Cordless Fuel Cell Disposal GuidelinesPaslode the industry leader in cordless technology provides this information to assist users with the proper disposal of discardedfuel cells. Acceptable disposal options vary depending on the type of fuel cell users. All users must consider federal, state andlocal solid waste regulations to ensure that discarded fuel cells are disposed of properly. Users must contact their local solid wasteauthority for further guidance.Discarded fuel cells (used or unused) may be considered hazardous waste under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act(RCRA) depending on several factors as described in the paragraphs that follow. Upon disposal used and unused fuel cells may beclassified as ignitable hazardous waste (waste code D001) under U.S. EPA regulations.Hazardous waste generated by homeowners and contractors who perform routine maintenance for homeowners in their homes arenot regulated by RCRA. In general, "household wastes" generated by homeowners and their contractors are exempt from hazardouswaste regulation because those wastes are expressly excluded from the definition of hazardous waste. For example US EPAhas excluded as "houshold waste" aerosol cans that contain residual product and propellent. Thus under federal hazardous wasteregulations homeowners and contractors may dispose of discarded fuel cells as general refuse in a properly permitted municipallandfill. These users must still contact their local solid waste authority to determine if any state or local regulation prohibits orrestricts such disposal.Paslode takes no responsibility for proper fuel cell disposal. Proper disposal remains the responsibility of sellers and users. Allsellers and users must contact their local solid waste authority to determine if any federal, state or local regulation prohibits orrestricts disposal. Fuel Cell and Metering ValveInserting Fuel CellInserting the metering valve/fuel cell assembly into theCordless Finish Nailer is very simple. To begin, press up atthe bottom of the actuator cover and pivot outward to open.The cover will swing out of the way.2. PULL OUTAs you slide the metering valve/fuel cell assembly into theCordless Finish Nailer, you will notice a yellow adapter atthe top of the cylinder pocket. As shown in the illustration,this adapter is designed to ensure that the metering valvestem is properly aligned with the small hole, or orifice, thatleads to the combustion chamber. Insert the metering valvestem into the orifice of the yellow -colored adapter.1. PRESS UPYellowAdapterFuel CellYellow MeteringValveMetering Valve StemNext, with the metering valve stem pointed toward the frontof the tool, insert the metering valve/fuel cell assembly.Close the actuator cover to complete the loading of fuel inthe Cordless Finish Nailer. Do this by swinging it up andover the metering valve/fuel cell assembly, and pushingdown until the actuator cover snaps into position.2. PUSH DOWN1. SWING BACK12

Preparing the Paslode Cordless 16 ga. Straight Finish NailerFastenersThe Paslode Cordless 16 ga. Straight Finish Nailer drivesPaslode ® 16 gauge straight fasteners designed to beused with the tool. The use of fasteners that do not meetPaslode standards could cause tool damage and will voidall warranty claims.Loading FastenersStep 1: Insert one or two strips of Paslode16 Gauge StraightFinish Nails into the rear of the magazine and slide forward.Step 2: While applying pressure to the release lever, pull thefollower toward the rear of the magazine until the followerpasses the last strip of nails.Step 3: Release the lever on the follower and let the followerpush the nails forward into the nose of the tool.Paslode Cordless 16 ga. StraightFinish Nailer and Outdoor WeatherUse the Cordless Finish Nailer outdoors, in dryweather, when the nailer, fuel cell, and battery arebetween 20°F (-7°C) and 120°F (49°C).HOT WEATHER OPERATIONThe Cordless Finish Nailer requires cooling of themotor assembly to operate properly. The fan normallyprovides the necessary air flow to permit continuousoperation. Whenever the Cordless Finish Nailer is idlefor extended periods, keep the fuel and tool out ofdirect sunlight and in surroundings where temperatureswill not exceed 120°F (49°C). After extended periodsof continuous use, it may be necessary to cool themotor by setting tool aside for 10-15 minutes or untilthe tool operates normally. An overheated tool maynot drive nails completely or may operate erratically.COLD WEATHER OPERATIONFuel cells at cold temperatures lose the requiredpropellant pressure. Bring the tool, fuel cell, andbattery above 20° F (-7° C) by placing the tool in aheated building or vehicle. Never expose the tool,fuel cell or battery to flameCAUTIONIn the illustration above, you will see an indicator arrow onthe side of the follower. When the indicator arrow is in thereload area, marked on the side of the magazine, you mayinsert a new strip of nails. When the indicator arrow reachesthe lockout area the tool automatically locks, preventing thetool from operating. To unlock the tool, simply reloadanother strip of nails.Lockout FeaturePull FollowerThe Cordless Finish Nailer should not be used inthe rain or where excessive moisture is present.The use of Paslode Cordless Technology underthese conditions may result in damage to toolcomponents and cause the tool to malfunction.The purpose of this feature is to prevent needlessblank cycling, which could mar woods, waste fueland damage tool components .Ten (10) nails will beleft in the magazine when the follower reaches thelockout area. When changing fastener length orloading at the beginning of the work day, you shouldinspect the magazine and nose for any fasteners leftin the tool. These nails will not be visible unless youopen the nose of the tool.13

Straight Finish Nailer OperationOperation:PRESS WORK –CONTACTINGELEMENTAGAINST THEWORK SURFACE.Fan motor starts,fuel is injected intocombustionchamber andmixed with air bythe fan.Turnadjustmentwheel ineitherdirectionSQUEEZETRIGGERSpark plug ignitesthe fuel/air mixturedriving the pistonassembly down onthe fastener.RELEASETRIGGER -LIFT TOOLCombustionchamber opens.Fan exhausts hotgases and coolsinternalcomponents.Depth of Drive AdjustmentRemove the battery before adjusting the depth ofdrive.The depth of drive adjustment is done by turning theadjustment wheel as shown by the arrows on the side of thetool.DANGERThe work contacting element and nose will become hotafter prolonged or rapid use. The following field service proceduresare the only service procedures you should attempt. Anythingelse that may appear wrong with the Cordless Finish Nailershould only be diagnosed and repaired by a fully trainedservice technician. If you have any reason to believe thatyour problem is beyond the service procedures in thismanual, contact your Paslode ® representative immediately.Battery CheckDANGERNever attempt any maintenance of a Paslode Cordlesstool without first removing the fuel cell and battery.Maintenance should be started only after the tool iscompletely inoperative.Fuel Cell CheckIf the Cordless Finish Nailer's fan operates and the indicatorlight is green, but the tool will not cycle or does not drivefasteners completely, check the fuel cell. With the fuel cellout of the tool, check to see if the cell still contains fuel andthat the metering valve is working. To determine if there isany fuel left in the fuel cell, hold in the upright position andsimply place the metering stem against a solid object, andgently push about three or four times. A small amount of fuelshould be released each time.DANGERWear safety glasses when performing this test. Neverperform this test near an open flame or sparks, whilesmoking, or where the fuel may get into your eyes.If fuel is not released with each operation of the meteringvalve, this indicates that there is no more fuel left in thecylinder and it must be replaced. Dispose of the empty fuelcell properly. (see page 16.)Clearing a JamAn occasional problem you may encounter is a jammedfastener. Because of the unique design of the CordlessFinish Nailer, clearing a jammed fastener is easy:1. Remove the battery.2. Pull the latch, releasing front guide. Pivot front guideforward.3. Clear jam, and push driver blade back up to its normalposition.4. Close front guide and latch it. Check that work contactingelement moves freely.Periodically check on the battery indicator light (the lightin the handle) of the Cordless Finish Nailer. Whenencountering a problem, the first step should always be tomake sure the battery has enough charge to operate thetool.When the work contacting element is depressed on thework piece, the fan motor will turn on and the blinking greenindicator light will turn solid green. If the indicator light blinksred or glows red, recharge the battery.16

ServicingAir FilterOpen the grille by pressing slightly above the adapter andpivoting the grille open. The air filter simply lifts out.Tap the filter GENTLY to remove any dust. Check and cleanthe air filter every two days. Soap and water restores thefilter to a "like new" condition.GRILLEFILTERWhen you get home:1. Place the battery in its charger if it needs charging asindicated by the red charge light on the handle.2. Wipe your Cordless Finish Nailer with a clean, softcloth.3. Remove and clean the filter every two days.4.
