CHINA 735-OJ-74 CHINA DALIAN BRITTISH BUSES CHINA A visit to China in April 2000 saw some changes to the earlier observations on 11 th November 1999 and a 1997 visit. It was pleasing to find that, during a visit to China, the Dalian British double deckers still carry out their duties on Route 401. There have been changes, particularly to liveries, but LT RMs excepted, it is doubted if such venerable buses run regular stage services anywhere else in the world. The major change is that a few buses now carry all over adverts. Most are in a darkish yellow livery with a red skirt which suits them well; 2 are in pale grey with a pale blue skirt and the remainder still carry all over adverts. Good news for Scotsmen is the fare dropping from 2 Yuan to 1 Yuan – 8p for the full trip! Both the CVG634 (ex KMB D500) and the CRL6DMS (ex LT DMS700, ex KMB 2D46), previously used as stores, have gone as the result of building on a seaward side of the depot yard. The single deckers, which were at the landward end of the yard, have also gone. On the DM/DMS front, 03 (which has not been seen on 2 previous visits) was in service which resolves that minor mystery but 26, which was, only seen in 1998, was not seen at all. 05 had its engine out and may be in use as a store. 08 was parked where 26 was in 1998 and did not appear to have run for sometime. The remaining 6 were all seen in service, which is good news for buses of that seniority. The new mystery is 12 – sadly one of the few vehicles of which I had neither photo nor detailed notes from previous visits!! There was a bus numbered 12 in service with the same registration noted 1998. However, there was an unregistered 12, with a Dalian Oriental Paint advert, in use as a store! Conjecture points to either the acquisition of another fleetline or they had a 27 th bus which was not seen on previous visits. Once more, no recovery vehicle was seen at the depot, but work was being carried out (in the open) on an engine (ex 05?). 02 appeared on my last day and was not in the depot or on the road previously. Since it was freshly painted in the yellow/red, it was safe to assume painting is done off site. During the repainting process, another Hong Kong registration has been revealed – BX649 on 16. The only other one visible is BW9832 on 14, which was noted in 1988. The operating pattern is unchanged with crews appearing to have their own buses. Crew baskets and changeovers are all carried out at the depot. Buses coming off still travel to the Sea Horizon Hotel terminus and run back to the depot empty and those coming on to service run empty to the hotel. This last mile of the route is the busiest in terms of bus numbers to be seen and, being spring passengers travelling the full length of the route had increased. Having a beach and park adjacent to the hotel, I imagine summer will see busy weekends there! During my visit, the city terminus at Qing Nie Jie was moved to the bottom of Jie Fang Lu – probably because building work at the old terminus so this may not be permanent. Outbound buses do 3 right turns and a left to regain Jie Fang Lu – but to all intents, the city terminus is still in close proximity to Victory Square and the Railway Station. Modernisation of the other local bus fleets continues with many modern locally built double and single deckers in evidence. One of 2 trolleybuses routes extant in 1998 (former route 102) has been converted to single deck bus operation but route 101 soldiers on. Dalian trams still run on routes 201 and 203 but route 202 – the longest and most scenic – was replaced by buses because of bridge rebuilding. This latter should only be a temporary closure. Nothing of note was seen during the rest of my visit but, Beijing apart (and they don’t seem as common) the north of China seems to prefer single deckers!
