General
Backing Up Classics, Harrisburg. 502 BTA, complete with a racing car on its roof, is used as an “eyecatching”
advert for this museum which specialises in racing car memorabilia. 502 BTA is located a couple of miles away
from the museum but alongside one of the principle highways to the Charlotte Motor Speedway stadium; painted
red it certainly is an eyecatcher!
Barrier Island Station, Duck. At some stage, and quite possibly before delivery to Barrier Island Station from British
Promotions, YRU 70 was fitted with Scottish-style triangular destination display, but I checked its identity,
definitely YRU 70!
Beaufort Historical Association, Beaufort. NVX 311 was donated to the Association by Mrs Smith, widow of the
previous owner, in 1978. It was still in a blue livery and remained thus until 1990 when it underwent a major
overhaul and repaint into red and cream. NVX 311 undertakes tours of the Beaufort historic district four days per
week, April to October, as well as charters. There are ten drivers, all volunteers.
British Motors, Durham. Because of restrictions on advertising hoardings, NLE 770 was acquired to overcome
some of these problems, though in practice it rarely strays from its yard. It too is painted red and carries the
words “Global Imports”. After a Darryl’s Restaurant at N Duke Street, Durham, had been sold to Greenfields
about 10-15 years ago, and it was to be remodelled, the rear wheels from NLE 770 were borrowed to enable a
bus to be removed from the building (destination unknown, the wheels were eventually returned). NB: Several
Darryl’s Restaurants in NC, FL and TN used an RT as part of the internal fittings, but very few were identified.
Double Decker Coffee Co, Asheville. Although acquired about 1996, 808 SHW only opened in 1999 after
protracted negotiations with the Authorities. It is red with a white band, and now seats 24 upstairs using the
original bus seats arranged face-to-face at little tables; downstairs there is a sales area with kitchen/servery at
the rear. It is off-road in a little “garden”, but does have a current NC licence (see above).
Kannapolis Charters, Kannapolis. 805 MHW is a well-appointed hospitality unit/function bus. The current owner
converted the bus to open-top and then fabricated a new roof which is installed on hydraulic rams installed in the
walls of the upper deck; these rams will raise the roof to 6’8” above upper deck floor when static, and allow it to
be lowered considerably when the bus is being moved. In a highly-polished red livery.
North Carolina Museum of Life & Science, Durham. NLE 770 was acquired with the intention of providing a means
for children from deprived homes, to reach the Children’s museum, but no thought had been given to low
bridges, etc., and so the ambition was never achieved.
Queens Landing, Mooresville. AJA 101B is in need of a little restoration, and again is another red bus! Its
eventual use is undecided - shuttle bus, or “eyecatcher”.
