Attracting Dangerous Wildlife<br />
u It is unlawful to feed dangerous wildlife, or to leave food or garbage in a place<br />
where dangerous wildlife may have access to it. Dangerous wildlife includes bears,<br />
foxes, coyotes, wolves and cougars.<br />
u A Conservation Officer can enter and inspect a building, other than a dwelling<br />
house, without a warrant if the <strong>of</strong>ficer believes on reasonable grounds that<br />
dangerous wildlife is or might be attracted to the place.<br />
u If a Conservation Officer believes that an attractant poses a risk to public safety<br />
the Officer may issue a Dangerous Wildlife Protection Order directing the person<br />
in charge to clean up, contain or remove the attractant.<br />
Baiting and Poisoning<br />
It is unlawful to:<br />
u use bait to hunt big game other than wolves or coyotes, or<br />
u possess or use poison or drugs to kill, injure, disable or capture wildlife.<br />
Definitions<br />
Bait means anything placed for luring or attracting wildlife by its sense<br />
<strong>of</strong> smell or taste but does not include parts <strong>of</strong> legally taken wildlife not<br />
reasonably suitable for human consumption that are located at the place in<br />
the field where the wildÌife died.<br />
<strong>Hunting</strong> means shooting at, attracting, searching for, chasing, flushing,<br />
pursuing, following after or on the trail <strong>of</strong>, stalking or lying in wait for wildlife.<br />
If you do, or try to do, any <strong>of</strong> these things (a) with the intent to wound, kill or<br />
capture wildlife, or (b) while in the possession <strong>of</strong> a firearm or other weapon,<br />
you are considered to be hunting even if you do not actually wound, kill or<br />
capture wildlife.<br />
Wildlife means a vertebrate animal <strong>of</strong> any species that is wild by nature, and<br />
includes wildlife in captivity but does not include fish. When referenced in<br />
the Wildlife Act and this booklet, the word wildlife includes dead or live wildlife,<br />
the whole or any part <strong>of</strong> wildlife, and the eggs and sperm <strong>of</strong> wildlife.<br />
Specially Protected Wildlife means cougar, gyrfalcon, peregrine falcon,<br />
trumpeter swan and the Chisana Caribou Herd.<br />
Big Game Animal means moose, caribou, wood bison, muskox, sheep, goat,<br />
deer, elk, black bear, grizzly bear, polar bear, wolf, wolverine and coyote.<br />
Small Game Animal means snowshoe hare, arctic ground squirrel<br />
and porcupine.<br />
Game Bird means grouse and ptarmigan.<br />
Carcass includes ALL the body parts <strong>of</strong> a dead animal.<br />
Possession means having something in any place for the use or benefit <strong>of</strong><br />
yourself or another person. This includes something that you keep <strong>of</strong>f your<br />
property or in the possession <strong>of</strong> another person.<br />
When one person in a group has something in their possession with the<br />
knowledge and consent <strong>of</strong> the rest, it is considered to be in the possession<br />
<strong>of</strong> each member <strong>of</strong> the group.
