ZONE 1<br />

Season Dates and Bag Limits<br />

The bag limits listed under each zone in the pages that follow are territorywide<br />

bag limits. For example, you can shoot only one moose each year in<br />

<strong>Yukon</strong>; NOT one moose in each zone.<br />

Exceptions: Inuvialuit hunters can access a special permit to hunt grizzly<br />

bears annually. Caribou hunters have area limits and territory-wide limits.<br />

Special Area Restrictions<br />

Ivvavik National Park, Vuntut National Park, Herschel Island Territorial Park<br />

These parks are closed to licensed hunting. Inuvialuit beneficiaries have the exclusive<br />

right to hunt within Ivvavik National Park and Herschel Island Territorial Park for<br />

subsistence purposes. Vuntut Gwitchin beneficiaries have the exclusive right to hunt<br />

within Vuntut National Park for subsistence purposes.<br />

Note: Subzones 1–02, 1–03, 1–06 to 1–11, 1–16 and 1–20 are now part <strong>of</strong> Ivvavik and<br />

Vuntut National Parks and no longer appear on the map or in the harvest chart.<br />

Dempster Highway<br />

Week-long closures<br />

Caribou hunting may be closed for a one-week period in the fall to let the leaders cross<br />

the Dempster Highway. The closure will be announced in local media.<br />

Big game no-hunting corridor<br />

Big game hunting is prohibited within 500 metres either side <strong>of</strong> the centre line <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Dempster Highway from kilometre 68 to the NWT border. Small game and game bird<br />

hunting is permitted in the corridor. This regulation is currently not being applied to<br />

caribou hunting.<br />

Development corridor<br />

The Dempster Highway development corridor extends to 8 km either side <strong>of</strong> the centre line<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Dempster Highway from kilometre 68 to the NWT border (Area Development Act).<br />

u Off-road vehicles: Off-road use <strong>of</strong> vehicles including all terrain vehicles and<br />

motorized trail bikes is prohibited within the Dempster Highway development<br />

corridor.<br />

u Snowmobiles: The use <strong>of</strong> snowmobiles is prohibited within the Dempster<br />

Highway development corridor until the ground is covered with snow. Restrictions<br />

on snowmobile use will be lifted each fall when conditions are right, and will be<br />

advertised in local media.<br />

Ni’iinlii Njik (Fishing Branch) Wilderness Preserve<br />

<strong>Environment</strong> <strong>Yukon</strong> respectfully asks all hunters not to hunt grizzly bears inside the<br />

Ni’iinlii Njik Wilderness Preserve. Please read page 9 for more information.<br />

Sheep <strong>Hunting</strong> in the Richardson Mtns (GMS 1–25 & 1–28)<br />

Two sheep permits will be issued for GMS 1–25 and 1–28. Mt. Dennis is excluded from<br />

the permit hunt area.
