xviiiC<strong>on</strong>cerning Adaptati<strong>on</strong>Comparing <strong>the</strong> two, we can see that <strong>the</strong> English adaptati<strong>on</strong> h<str<strong>on</strong>g>as</str<strong>on</strong>g> successfully captured <strong>the</strong>flavor of <strong>the</strong> original and several of its melodic phr<str<strong>on</strong>g>as</str<strong>on</strong>g>es. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, this transcripti<strong>on</strong> inWestern notati<strong>on</strong> includes many of <strong>the</strong> implied embellishments of Byzantine chant. It also follows<strong>the</strong> formulaic rules perfectly, except in <strong>the</strong> beginning of <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d staff where <strong>the</strong> word“me” is used with a melodic phr<str<strong>on</strong>g>as</str<strong>on</strong>g>e that is supposed to have two syllables instead of <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong>e.We shall now proceed to examine various adapti<strong>on</strong>s of this hymn in o<strong>the</strong>r foreign languages. The following example is taken from an An<str<strong>on</strong>g>as</str<strong>on</strong>g>t<str<strong>on</strong>g>as</str<strong>on</strong>g>imatari<strong>on</strong> in Rumanian: 8This example is similar to <strong>the</strong> fourth and fifth examples in that <strong>the</strong> original Greek melodyh<str<strong>on</strong>g>as</str<strong>on</strong>g> not been preserved, but <strong>the</strong> text h<str<strong>on</strong>g>as</str<strong>on</strong>g> not been distorted, and <strong>the</strong> music follows <strong>the</strong> formulaicrules of Byzantine music. It also follows <strong>the</strong> orthographical rules faithfully, except in <strong>on</strong>e place:8 An<str<strong>on</strong>g>as</str<strong>on</strong>g>t<str<strong>on</strong>g>as</str<strong>on</strong>g>imatarul, Sfintei M<strong>on</strong><str<strong>on</strong>g>as</str<strong>on</strong>g>tiri Neamţu, Bucureşti, 1943, p. 1.
