xxviiiC<strong>on</strong>cerning Notati<strong>on</strong>Two problems were solved with <strong>the</strong> introducti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong>se foreign sounds into <strong>the</strong>text. First, a practical <strong>on</strong>e: <strong>the</strong>y had <strong>the</strong> effect of abbreviating an extended melodicphr<str<strong>on</strong>g>as</str<strong>on</strong>g>e into groups of a few notes, <strong>the</strong>reby making it e<str<strong>on</strong>g>as</str<strong>on</strong>g>ier for <strong>the</strong> soloist or <strong>the</strong> choir tosing. Sec<strong>on</strong>dly, it solved an aes<strong>the</strong>tic problem; <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>s<strong>on</strong>ants er<str<strong>on</strong>g>as</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed <strong>the</strong> unple<str<strong>on</strong>g>as</str<strong>on</strong>g>antnessof a sustained vowel and offered an incentive to <strong>the</strong> chanter to add emph<str<strong>on</strong>g>as</str<strong>on</strong>g>is atcertain points where <strong>the</strong> composer, scribe or psalte [i.e., chanter] thought fit. 2In this book <strong>the</strong>se c<strong>on</strong>s<strong>on</strong>ants were usually preserved in <strong>the</strong> melodic phr<str<strong>on</strong>g>as</str<strong>on</strong>g>es that call for<strong>the</strong>m. They are written in paren<strong>the</strong>ses so that it is clear that <strong>the</strong>y are not a part of <strong>the</strong> words andso that those who prefer not to use <strong>the</strong>m in English may omit <strong>the</strong>m.The “int<strong>on</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s” (ajphchvmata) that may be <str<strong>on</strong>g>chanted</str<strong>on</strong>g> before a hymn have been listed in <strong>the</strong>Appendix by number. The appropriate number for <strong>the</strong> int<strong>on</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> is provided <strong>on</strong>ly at <strong>the</strong> beginningof those hymns that Ath<strong>on</strong>ite chanters might precede with an int<strong>on</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>.2 C<strong>on</strong>omos, Dimitri E., Byzantine Trisagia and Cheroubika of <strong>the</strong> Fourteenth and Fifteenth Centuries, PatriarchalInstitute for Patristic <strong>St</strong>udies, Thessal<strong>on</strong>iki, 1974, p. 264.
