An iconic occasion in the European social calendar, this famous race meeting
brings together world-class jockeys and horses with a glittering array of
society’s finest. Watch the thoroughbreds thunder down the racecourse from
the Royal Enclosure, Ascot’s most exclusive viewing area, where you can
expect to mingle with royalty, socialites and racing aficionados. Otherwise,
hire out a private box to enjoy the races in a more tranquil setting. In between
races, swan about on the lush green lawns, enjoying the electric atmosphere
as photographers snap away at the glorious outfits and gravity-defying hats
on show. The dress code is traditional: men must wear full morning attire and
top hats, whilst for women a modest, classy outfit is a must.
Located in a sheltered valley overlooking a cove on the south Cornish coast,
Caerhays Castle and its surrounding grounds are the stuff of Anglophile
dreams. Built in the 19th century, this picturesque estate offers guests the
opportunity to experience old English hospitality and traditions, most notably
game shooting. Over 80 days of shooting take place each year, with the shoot
extending to over 4,000 acres and featuring at least 40 separate drives. All
the game – predominantly pheasant but also partridge – is reared on-site
from egg to bird by three full-time keepers, ensuring birds of the best quality.
Shooting days are interspersed with round-the-clock refreshments, including
a lavish post-shoot afternoon tea followed by a personal tour of the castle by
its owner Charles Williams. During the shoot, guests may stay at The Vean, a
luxury country house retreat overlooking the castle grounds. The top suite, the
‘Nancor’, offers glorious views down the Porthluney valley.
