A great big thanks goes out to the Cedar Sams
Club that came out to Camp Courageous
on a misty Saturday morning to help plant
flowers and spread wood chips on the trails.
After the work was completed as luck would
have it, out pops the sun but the rain in the
morning didn’t even slow this crew down.
Camp was fortunate to have Coach Matthew
Thede and the Cedar Rapids Prairie High
School baseball team volunteer at camp
during “Cruisin’ for Camp Courageous.” The
boys were a lot of fun and helped in so many
ways. During the time they were at camp,
they helped with parking, helped serve and
work in the kitchen, manned the food stands,
assist with the camp’s bouncy house and
found a little time to pick out a favorite car!
Shown are the boys with coach Thede and
their adult chaperones. We hope to make
these boys annual visitors during Cruisin’!
A big thanks to the National Honor Society
students from Anamosa High School, and
their advisor, Dan Husmann. All of the students
were hard workers and they accomplished
a lot, including some organization in the
dietary department, cleaned at the pool,
and eradicated many, many bags of garlic
mustard weeds.
Anamosa Ag students came over to Camp
Courageous to volunteer with some projects
in the woods. They were a great help and put
their talents to good use. It’s great to have
such eager volunteers and we hope then can
come back again this fall or next spring.
Another great group of physical therapy
students from the University of Iowa were here
in March to work with respite care campers.
A big thanks goes to Sam Wiechman, Aaron
Burke, Doug Perkins, Taylor Sweers and
Mandy Kakac for helping to give the campers
an amazing weekend.
Darlene Edgington with the St. Joseph
Catholic Church Quilters from Marion is
shown with some the creations they worked
on and donated to camp. They made a
couple of fun denim quilts that are sure to be
a hit with the campers. Thank you ladies for
sharing your time and talents with camp.
This year for the United Way day of caring
the camp had a great group of workers from
Clifton Gunderson LLP. The group was eager
to tackle the tasks of mulching and cleaning
up the flower gardens, power washing
buildings, sealing the new picnic tables, and
sealing wooden structures out in the woods.
Camp really appreciate people taking time
out of their week to help get ready for the
summer season.
Camp was fortunate to have another great
group of nursing students from the University
of Dubuque volunteer this spring. The
students work with respite care campers as
part of their pediatric learning experience.
The students who volunteered this year were
Melissa Neimen, Amanda Ernst, Stephanie
Duehr, Rachel Gratz, Bailey Abele, Robert
Sarver, Ray Del Rosario, Erin Evans, Korie
Miller, Kristin Mortensen, Susan Szymczak,
Hannah Haugestuen, Kelsey Rursch, Kim
Sanquist and Angela Damptz.
celebrated their
50th Anniversary!
Above Gary Wilson,
gets ready to
show a video to
those gathered to
celebrate. Gary
has done a remarkable job on the facilities
at PRUMCC, along with offering a great
program, and never has the relationship
between the two camps been better. We both
use each other's resources to help make our
camp's the best for the campers. Gary, and
his wife, Gwen and children Brett and Kate
are great Camp Courageous volunteers.
