GROWING THE NEWEST‘THANKYOU, MR PETER!’The homemade card standsout from the match fixturesand newspaper clippings pinnedto Peter Cates’ SANFLoffice walls.‘Mr Peter, thankyou forteaching us football - we hadfun!’, another reads.Cates sits underneath thefluttering mural of papers, attending to work as theSANFL’s first-ever InclusivePrograms Manager. As he describes it to a newemployee who pops into the officefor an introduction, his is a job that“deals with everything outsideyour stereotypical Aussie blokeplaying footy”.That means running footyprograms for women, indigenousgroups, the homeless and peoplewith disabilities.Importantly, it also means givingmulticultural communities - youngkids, in particular - their first forayinto Australian Rules football. There is a common perceptionthat Adelaide’s multiculturalcommunities are all refugees. Thisisn’t so, says Cates. Many of theIndian and Chinese children heworks with these days are fromskilled migrant families. But those who are indeed “newarrivals” from war-torn countrieslatch onto footy programs run byCates as a way to stabilisethemselves in their strangenew home.“The kids don’t really talk abouttheir experiences and I don’t pry,”Cates says.“When I’ve gone to communitymeetings, some speak openlyabout the traumas they’ve beenthrough but at footy training, it’s allabout having fun.“There was one young lad fromSierra Leone recently who hadstarted school in Adelaide andhadn’t spoken, hadn’t smiled…he’d been through a prettytraumatic time.“Well, we got him into a footyclinic and as the kids were goingfor the tackle bag and falling overand having a good time, he juststarted laughing and laughing…and his teachers started crying.“That lad stood out to me - he hadthe footy in his hands, he was onhis way. He just needed somethingto break the ice and realise he wasin a safe environment.”

TheHighlighting our cultural diversityStand by for ‘be active’Multicultural Round, whichhighlights the cultural diversity ofour game and the stories of ourmulticultural players, historians, supporters and staff united in theirlove of football. The SANFL is extremely proactivein introducing the game of football toall South Australians – includingthose who are recently arrived.Make sure you get to a game andsoak up the incredible atmospherethat will prevail at all venues. You will be so enthused by theoutstanding talent that is on display. Can you remember the 2009 GrandFinal and the fun that we saw atAAMI Stadium?Local StoriesAs we head into the middle ofAugust we can start planning for theFinals. Is your team ready to have acrack at the flag? Has the cupboardbeen bare for a long time? Are youabout to put your hands on atrophy? If you are involved in a club thatlooks like it might create some sortof history then please drop me a lineat the cave. I would love to give yousome publicity over the next fewweeks. What does a premiership mean toa small community? The hotels willdo a roaring trade for a while andsmiles will be the order of the day.Mums and wives will busy gettingthe catering in order for the busydays ahead. It does not matter atwhat level or in what sport – if youwin a premiershipit is a feeling that will stay with youforever.Phantomthe ghost that talkssend your thoughts through tothe SA Footy Budgetjmurphy@boylen.com.auShortening quartersThere have been discussions latelyabout shortening the length ofquarters. What do you think? Surelyaround the 25 minute markmultiplied by four is enough time towork out who is the better team. Some of the AFL quarters havestretched to around the 30 to 35minute mark and that just seemstoo much.It is great to see the talented upand coming players awarded withthe Powerade Star Search Awardeach week. We could build somesort of presentation to take placeon Grand Final day with all playersrunning onto the ground and thewinner being presented as partof the build up to the senior’sGrand Final.I firmly believe that such aninnovation would really add to theday’s activities. I also believe weshould have a goal kickingcompetition and a player’s relay orsprint. Let’s make it a really fun filledand exciting day. Some of those events could takeplace at half-time in the senior’sgame. It would be a real buzz with somuch to look at during the break.Bring it on!Not just playersThere will be many anxious playersin the next few weeks – and alsoumpires – as they await theannouncement of the lists for thereally important games thatlie ahead. Those that have to pass on the badnews will feel really gutted becausetheir decisions could well mean themen and women concerned willseek to move on.They will see it as a failure not tohave made the best outfit and theirimmediate reaction could well be tothrow the towel in. It’s all part ofwhat happens at every club, everyyear and the strong will build on it.City CentralI strolled around the Adelaide Ovalthe other day. What a magnificentstadium! How exciting will it be when ourcricketers and the visitingEnglishmen march to the middle inthe first week of December to playTest Cricket? The two skippers will suck in someair and get ready to entertain 25,000cricket hungry fans. Let’s be honest– Adelaide and the Test matchadd up to one big party.I can hardly wait for SANFLmatches to be played there again. We are on the long count down toplaying AFL games there and I canhardly wait.Next week I will look at some ofthe better umpires doing the rounds. There are some wonderful stories tobe told!letters from the caveDear Phantom,I am a keen footy fan and tookinterest in your perfect scenariofor a round of SANFL footy. Tothink that games wouldn’t beclashing and you could get to acouple of games in a weekendwould be awesome!Let’s hope there can be moreFriday night games and then wecan go along to another game onSaturday afternoon.Bill S of Camden Park6

Another MilestoneBy steve barrettAside from personal pride, club icon status and apermanent place in the historybooks, Brant Chambers’ landmark200th match today means thepromise of many free dinners forthe rest of the Sturt champion’s life.“I was speaking with BenNelson’s dad, Sandy, (former1960s and ’70s Double Bluespremiership star),” said thelaidback, affable Chambers.“He said the best part of gettingthere is you keep getting invited to200-club dinners at the footy cluband you get to catch up with otherguys over the years.“He also said in the course ofyour lifetime, footy’s like a littlespeed-hump - it’s gone before it’seven there, even 200 games.”The impact of Chambers’ ‘speedhump’has been significant. When he slammed 10 goalsagainst West Adelaide in July 2008,the powerful Sturt spearhead notonly joined the 500-goal club, buthe surpassed former Port keyforward Darren Smith to enterthe SANFL’s all-time top 20goalkickers list. With considerable haste,Chambers has ascended therankings ever since (he currentlysits eighth). On Anzac Day this year, the 30year old overhauled Rick Davies’long-standing club-record 635majors and realistically, hasNorwood’s pre-World War IIspearhead Bruce Schultz (669) andPort’s 1990 Magarey Medallist ScottHodges (684) in his sights. If Chambers can overtake both ofthose gentlemen, he’ll be in theSANFL’s all-time top half dozen.“The diehard supporters takeclose notice and keep remindingme about it,” said Chambers, who,in his late teens, ran onto the MCGwhen his idol Tony Lockett kickedhis 100th goal in 1998, a feelingChambo would experience twicein 2007 and 2008.“Deep down it’s somethingI’m definitely proud of, but I’llprobably look back on thoseindividual achievements and the100-goal seasons more when mycareer’s over.”Originally from Myrtlebank, some200km east of Melbourne,Chambers played his junior footyBrant Chambers and his 2009 Ken Farmer Medal.with Gembrook in the Yarra ValleyLeague and represented EasternRanges in the Under 18s.He was then invited to do apre-season with Collingwood(1999), the club he grew upbarracking for.Unfortunately the AFL dreamdidn’t go to plan.“That was disheartening,” he said.“We weren’t treated the best – we
