Eleanor, driven by Cage,outraced police cars in the longest car chasein motion picture history with Long Beach,California as the backdrop.Eleanor became so famous that nowadays, licensedreplicas are selling for $139,000 to $189,000 in theUnited States. In fact, any car with the name “Shelby”attached commands a premium price. In 2007, an800 horsepower model of the 1966 Cobra, once autoracer and car builder Carroll Shelby’s personal ride,was sold at an auction in Scottsdale, Arizona for $5.5million, a record for an American carCarroll Shelby, who died in Dallas, Texas last May10 at the age of 89, is recognized as the creator ofthe American muscle car that dominated the worldof racing in the 1960s. The charismatic Shelby led acolorful life: he was a rural Texan (born in Leesburg,Texas in 1923), a U.S. Army Air Corps flight instructorduring World War II and a chicken farmer whoreportedly turned to racing when all his chickens died.From 1970 to 1977 he ran a safari tour business inAfrica and later, back in Texas, a chili cook-off diner.He had a heart transplant from a Las Vegas gamblerin 1990 and a kidneytransplant from a sonin 1996. He created afoundation in 1991 toassist children needingacute coronary andkidney care and surgery.He was married seventimes.Shelby first gainedinternational attention in1954 at a Kimberly Cuprace in Argentina whenhe drove an Allard withDave Duncan. Whenthe engine erupted intoflames, he told Duncanto douse the fire byurinating on it. With the fire extinguished, Shelbyfinished tenth, first among the amateur teams.That same year, Shelby was seriously injuredwhile competing in the Carrera Pan American Mexico,flipping his Austin Healey four times after T-boning arock. His injuries did not stop him from racing a fewmonths later at Sebring, Florida, co-driving a 3.0-literMonza Ferrari with Phil Hill with his broken elbow ina fiberglass cast and his hand taped to the steeringwheel. Hill and Shelby placed second in the 12-hourrace.In 1959, driving an Aston Martin with teammateRay Salvadori, he won France’s grueling 24 Hours atLe Mans race, thus helping Aston Martin clinch theworld manufacturing championship. Throughout the1950s he won dozens of races in various classes,twice earning the Sports Illustrated Driver of theYear title, the second time in 1957 after winning 19consecutive races. He set a number of endurancerecords driving an Austin-Healey at the Bonneville SaltFlats in Utah.In 1960, while trying to fend off an anticipatedheart attack, Shelby drove a 2,000-mile race atLaguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, California withnitroglycerin pills beneath his tongue. He finishedthird but said that if he hadn’t slowed down each timehe popped one of the pills, he might have won.A diagnosis of angina ended his racing careerin 1960, part of a lifelong battle with heart disease.Shelby announced his retirement as a driver afterwinning the U.S. Road Racing Championship Series atRiverside International Raceway. He then focused onbuilding an American sports car that would beat thebest European models.In 1961, when AC Sports Cars in England lostBristol, its engine supplier, Shelby offered to usethe Ace’s lightweight chassis to build a V8-poweredsports car. The Cobra DaytonaCoupe took first over-all at the1965 12-hour Sebring race.The Cobras won the Sports CarClub of America manufacturingchampionships from 1963 through1965. Shelby also helpeddevelop some of the most soughtaftertrack and street Mustangsin history, notably the Shelby GT500.Shelby and his team wereinstrumental in developing the legendary Ford GT-40series that finished 1-2-3 at the 1966 Le Mans 24Hours, humbling the mighty Ferrari juggernaut whileHenry Ford II proudly looked on. Television personalityand car collector Jay Leno says that Shelby was thefirst American to beat Ferrari in Europe and he wasa lot like Enzo Ferrari since neither were trainedengineers, but they hired the right people and had thevision to create legendary sports cars. “Shelby wasresponsible for or involved with three of the coolestcars of the ‘60s: the GT40, the Cobra and the GT350,”Leno said after hearing of Shelby’s demise.In fact, Shelby was the only individual to influencethe designs of all three major American car makerssince he helped Chrysler develop the supercharged400-hp, V10 Dodge Viper in the 1980s,In 1992, Shelby was inducted into the AutomotiveHall of Fame. CLUB NEWS81st ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETAround 300 members attended theannual meeting which started at 3:00 p.m.with the invocation by AAP Treasurer JacintoM. Mantaring, Jr. and a welcome addressby Vice President Juan B. Angeles, Jr. AfterPresident Augusto C. Lagman called themeeting to order and a quorum was verifiedby Corporate Secretary Nestor M. Mejia,the reading of the minutes of the previousmeeting was dispensed with as a motion forits approval was made and seconded by twomembers in the audience.In his annual report to the members,Mr. Lagman cited AAP’s activities andaccomplishments in 2011. “In order not to beleft behind in what seems to be a continuingimprovement of the Philippine economy, AAPdecided to make several bullish moves in thepast year,” he said.One bullish move was the transfer ofAAP’s main office from Aurora Boulevardin Quezon City to 28 EDSA in Greenhills,San Juan in July 2011 to be more visibleand more accessible to AAP membersand the general motoring public. The QCpremises have been retained as the officeof AAPLingkod (AAPL), the headquarters ofAAPL’s Emergency Roadside Service (ERS)and the site of the AAP Goodyear Auto CareService Center.More recently, AAP opened a new officein Lipa City, Batangas to serve members andthe motoring public in the Calabarzon area.In 2011, AAPL acquired four newtow trucks with state-of-the-art recoveryequipment to further improve ERS operations.AAP members air their concerns and ask questionsduring the open forum.Aside from ERS and the auto care center,AAPL has a one-stop insurance shopthat offers AAP members a wide range ofinsurance products at competitive rates suchas coverage for vintage and classic cars, realestate property and travel. AAPL also sellsfamous brands of batteries and tires to AAPmembers at discounted prices. AAPL is awholly owned subsidiary of AAP with a newOperations Manager, Joey Mundo.In advocacies, AAP spearheaded thelaunching of the United Nations Decade ofAction for Road Safety 2011-2020 on May11, 2011 at the Asian Development Bank inPasig City. AAP chairs the Philippine GlobalRoad Safety Partnership (PGRSP) thatcoordinates road safety projects with pertinentgovernment agencies and non-governmentorganizations (NGOs). AAP initiated theRoad Safety Pledge campaign which waspicked up by the BPI Family Savings Bank asits corporate social responsibility project for2011 and was brought to northern Luzon bythe AAP Ilocos Norte Drive Tourism Caravanlast November.The AAP Tourism Committee chaired byformer Tourism Secretary now AAP DirectorMina Gabor began organizing AAP Travel asthe brand of AAPLakbay, the national autoclub’s travel and tourism organization. InNovember 2011, AAP organized a threedaycaravan/ tour of Ilocos Norte that wascoordinated with the Department of Tourismregional office, local government officialsof Pangasinan, La Union and Ilocos Norte,and attracted the participation of over100 members and guests including theambassadors of Malaysia, Pakistan, Bruneiand Greece, their spouses and staff. AAPTravel will open its office at the Mall of Asiathis year with an experienced tourism industryexecutive, Eva Carmona, as manager.In motorsports, the FederationInternationale de l’Automobile (FIA), theParis-based body that governs all four-wheelmotor sports worldwide including FormulaOne, approved AAP’s application for a grantto upgrade the training of local race officialsto international standards. The officialssafety training program will begin this yearin partnership and with the assistance of theConfederation of Australian Motor Sports.Meanwhile, AAP continues to support theTuason Racing School’s Champions of theFuture Program that encourages youngsters(ages 8 to 13) to compete in motor sportsby subsidizing their running costs in karting,the entry level of auto racing. AAP continuesto honor the racing champions of each yearwith the Annual Motor Sports Awards, thelast being the 17th such event. In 2011, AAPsanctioned 41 national and six internationalmotor sport events, issued 114 full nationalcompetition licenses, 46 internationalcompetition licenses and 219 Clubmannational licenses.Mr. Lagman, who is a Region II (Asia-Pacific) vice president of the FIA, reportedthat AAP continues to attend the annualConference Week, general assemblies andregional meetings of the FIA, of which AAPis the only Philippine member. AAP hasrenewed its reciprocity agreements withother FIA member clubs worldwide and withthe American Automobile Association. AAPhas joined the ASEAN New Car AssessmentProgram which held its first meeting in KualaLumpur last September with AutomobileAssociation Malaysia as the host.Numbers tell the rest of the AAP storyin 2011: membership grew to 46,883although Philippine International DrivingPermits (PIDP) issued declined to 26,774;AAP assisted 3,082 members in registeringtheir cars at the Land Transportation Office;the total number of motorists who called forand received AAPL’s ERS reached 38,732.AAP continues to communicate with itsmembers via AQ, a glossy, full-color quarterlymagazine and a supplement that appears inthe Philippine Daily Inquirer six times a year.Following Mr. Lagman’s report, a livelyopen forum was conducted during whichmembers present asked questions and airedtheir concerns. Afterwards, the board ofcanvassers led by Alas, Oplas & Co., CPAs,canvassed the ballots and proclaimed theboard members for the year 2012-2013. Allthe members of the 2011-2012 board werereelected. From November 1997 to April 2002, Mundo wasthe Cluster General Manager ASEAN Kodak whose expanded Southeast Asianmarket included Myanmar, Laos, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Cambodia andThailand. Simultaneously, he was the Country Business Manager (Philippines) ofKodak from January 1994 to April 2002.A sportsman and rifle shooter (he was the Philippine record holder and one of14 world record holders in the Olympic prone rifle event in 1984,) Mundo servedas a commissioner of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) from March 2005to July 2008 during which period he formed and implemented managementand operations policies for sports administration, national sports programs andprojects. He was also a director of the Philippine Task Force for the SoutheastAsian Games and oversaw the administrative, logistical and financial aspects ofthe Asian Shooting Confederation.Mundo left the PSC in 2008 to become one of the business plan consultantsof the royal family of Kuwait. In February 2009, he returned to Manila and was reappointedas a PSC commissioner. Duringher stint at Hong Kong Express Airways, she increasedthe number of passengers from 30,408 in 2009 to36,823 in 2010.Carmona is concurrently taking her MBA in MiddleManagement at the Ateneo de Manila Graduate Schoolof Business. She expressed optimism that AAP Travel, withall the local and international connections of AAP, willachieve its strategic goals. She said her dream is to tapnot only AAP members and corporate accounts, but alsothe general motoring public. At first I thoughtit was strange that Lexus didn’t put a V8 inhere (like in the old model), opting insteadfor a V6. All things considered, the engineerswere able to achieve excellent output figuresas the new 3.5-liter Dual VVT-i, D-4S, V6engine produces 312 horsepower, not farbehind from the old 4.6 liter V8 that had343 horsepower. Don’t think that becauseit’s a smaller engine and has less horsepowerthat the new GS is a slouch... far from it.On the open road, the F Sport lungesforward when you floor the throttle, lettingall 312 horses loose on the asphalt. 100km/h is dispatched in just over 6 seconds...yet it still feels like 60. The needle wentup even higher, and still it felt stable andvery composed. The GS even has a uniqueintake note generator, giving a noticeablethis thing go! What was actually remarkablewas it’s cornering abilities, especially in SportS+ mode. With a stiffer suspension settingin S+, the GS 350 F Sport demonstratesthe chassis’s remarkable abilities, and yet ithas one more surprise: four-wheel steering,allowing up to 2 degrees of angle for the rearwheels. Oh joy.On winding roads the GS 350 F Sporttakes on the corners with more confidencethan any other Lexus I’ve driven or riddenbefore... well, except maybe for the ISF. It’spoised and composed with that four-wheelsteering system, and actually begs for morechallenging roads.Out of the back roads and onto anexpressway, there it was: a clear, wideopen, dual carriageway. And boy, canand done with, and before I knew it, I wasalready maxing out at 240 km/h, and stillthere’s a little more to give.I was always of the opinion that everygeneration of Lexus before were not whatwe car enthusiasts would call emotionalcars. What would it look like? What would it be like todrive? Would it be any good, especially since we so love the “standard” Cooper S 3-doorhatch?Well, it’s finally here. Let’s find out for ourselves.First off, the car looks strange. Well, peculiar is the more apt word. It’s definitely aMINI with the same (albeit tweaked) front fascia as well as the rear. What’s unusual is theroof which, to me, looks like a baseball cap worn backwards. Being an S, the Coupe rideson the larger set of wheels and tires. It does grow on you, and if you like attention, theCoupe is definitely you.Inside, they haven’t done much to alter the dashboard, seats, gauges, buttons andcontrols for the new model. What they have added, or at least incorporated from thenew Countryman S is the new MINI media player and screen at the center of that hugespeedometer that dominates the dashboard. The media center is controlled via a multidirectionalknob on the center console. I wish they moved some of the buttons around,especially the ones at the base of the shifter for better ergonomics, but since this car is allabout retro style, I understand why they didn’t.Being a coupe means that this MINI is strictly a 2-seater. It’s a snug fit inside, andthe lowered roof does make a challenging ingress for the more vertically endowedamongst us (not me), but they did shape the ceiling to accommodate what lookslike another inch or two of height for the driver. For cargo space, there’snot much, but it’s pretty respectable all considered. The Coupe isessentially a lift-back, and allows bigger cargo by removing the trunk’sdivider/cover.Being a Coupe S means this car gets the punchy 1.6 litertwinscroll turbo engine. The turbo engine is good for 184horsepower and 260 Newton meters of torque, plenty ofpower to accelerate the Coupe S from 0 to 100 km/h in just7.1 seconds. With a 6-speed automatic transmission, topspeed is pegged at 222 km/h.Driving the car around town, it’s okay. If I remembercorrectly, this new Coupe S feels much stiffer than theCooper S hatchback we drove earlier. It does get quiteuncomfortable if you find yourself on one of our many,imperfectly-paved city streets. On an open highway orexpressway, however, the Coupe S comes alive in a big way.One thing they really didn’t change isthe handling and the short overhangs,giving the Coupe S cornering reflexessimilar to a go-kartEnter a winding mountain road and the price you paid driving in the city is well worthit. The suspension does everything it can and more to keep the car on course. Brakes feel great,and the twinscroll turbo really kicks in when you floor it out of the corners.The MINI Coupe S, exhilaratinga drive as it may be, is not perfect.There are quite a few trade offs toachieve the Coupe form factor, andit’s really up to you whether or notyou’ll like it... or are willing to livewith the harsh ride around town.Personally? Of course, thechoice is biased toward performance; that, afterall, is what makes driving a pleasure. We do,however, live in the real world and there are,in my mind, certain amenities a car must have,notwithstanding that they may detract from,or even diminish, to some extent, the aspectof performance. Mundane notions, such aspassenger and luggage space, comfort, reliabilityand so on. Finally, it must look great and that’snon-negotiable.I recently was given the chance to get behindthe wheel of an Audi RS5 and, when done withthe drive, was left with the indelible impressionthat I had just driven what may have qualified tobe an ideal car. Let me tell you why.Consider these numbers: 0-100 kph in4.6 seconds, top speed of 240 kph (280kph available on request). Those areseriously fast numbersPERFORMANCEAs every car buff knows, the RS badge on an Audi means theultimate performer for that model. The initials RS is to Audi as M isto BMW and AMG are to Mercedes-Benz. Audi only makes the A4,A5 and A6 in RS spec so the RS5 is a relatively rare, certainly veryspecial Audi with performance written all over it.Consider these numbers: 0-100 kph in 4.6 seconds, top speedof 240 kph (280 kph available on request). Those are seriously fastnumbers and those are what the RS5 gets out of a displacement of4,163 cc, producing an output of 450 hp @ 8,250 rpm and 430Nm of torque @ 4-6,000 rpm. A close relative to the V10 engine inthe Audi R8 sportscar, the 4.2 litre V8 in the RS5 certainly fits thebill of a high-performance engine – high-revving, flat torque curve atlow rpm – and breaks the 100 hp per litre of engine displacement,which is the hallmark of any performance engine worthy of thename, by posting 108.2 hp/litre. The RS5’s dynamics are alsocertainly aided by its weighing only 1,762 kgs. More power andless weight makes for an unbeatable combination.The driver will appreciate the RS5’s 7-speed twin-clutchS-tronic transmission which allows driving in full auto mode orcan be manually shifted through the gears via the selector leveror steering wheel-mounted paddles. The twin-clutch gearbox willallow the driver to choose his gears and up- or downshift at speedsfaster than humanly possible. In automatic mode, the driver canchoose between three modes – Comfort, Dynamic and Auto. Whenthe Dynamic setting is chosen, the steering ratio, transmissionshift speed, engine response, sport differential setting and exhaustsystem are all reset to a sportier level. The Auto setting will movebetween Comfort and Dynamic automatically, depending ondriving conditions. A Launch Control program is also at the driver’sfingertips for optimal (spell quickest) standing starts.Then there is the permanent four-wheel drive, which Audipioneered in its iconic rallying Quattros. With a new self-locking,compact and lightweight crown-gear differential, a 40-60 frontto-rearsplit is the default setting; however, up to 70% of engineoutput can be directed to the front wheels, and up to 85% to therears, as conditions require. Electronic torque vectoring distributestorque under cornering to minimize tire slippage.Other performance-enhancing features include a lowered (by20mm) chassis, 14.37-inch front discs for fade-free braking and arear spoiler which deploys at high speeds for added downforce.24 AQ MAGAZINE AQ MAGAZINE 25

Its engine anddrivetrain have been engineered for minimum friction and, in addition,the RS5 has an energy-recovery system (a la F1). The RS5 is alsoa passenger car and does not sacrifice passenger or cargo space toperformance. The RS5 is a four-passenger car with a spacious boot.It is a car for the track or for family drives. It is a perfect blend ofperformance and practicality.DESIGNIn my book, the A5 is the best-looking, best-designed vehiclein the Audi line-up. And it would seem that I am not alone in thisassessment, as the current A5 has received more design and stylingawards than any of its Audi siblings or, for that matter, its other Germancompetitors. As I have said previously, its proportions are nigh perfectand it looks great from any and every angle. It looks as if it had beencarved from a single block of steel.The RS5 is even better looking than the A5 as the wider tires andfender flares give it a more muscular look, reminding me of the rallyingimmortal, the Audi Quattro S1. The interior is typically Audi – a tastefulblend of leather, carbon fiber and wood accentsDRIVING IMPRESSIONSDriving the RS5 is simply and totally a blast! In Comfort mode, it is completelydocile, yet with oodles of power. Shift to Dynamic mode, however, and all hell breaksloose. Driving-wise, the RS5 reminds me of a full-bore rally car. The acceleration isneck-snapping and the engine just never stops pulling. Cornering is flat, controlledand seemingly limitless. The size of the RS5 is ideal for throwing it around corners,and I have to confess that I kept the RS5 in Dynamic mode more often than notbecause the engine exhaust resonance was so addicting. The suspensionhas been revised for better agility and cornering.FerrariF12 BerlinettaRECENTLY, Ferrari’s Philippine distributor reopened its showroom, re-launching the Prancing Horse badge to the country.The launch also marked the arrival of the 458 Italia, the California, as well as the subsequent launch of the FF, the V12powered hatchback from Ferrari... their first.Overseas, however, Ferrari gave the world a new car to replace the 599 series of grand touring cars: the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta.It has the same engine as the FF -- a 6.3-liter DOHC, 65-degree V12 engine that produces 730 horsepower, making it the mostpowerful Ferrari with road-legal status. Zero-to-100 km/h takes just 3.1 seconds.It’s also at the forefront of the latest technology from the Scuderia, sporting a 7-speed dual clutch transmission, ceramicbrakes, magneto-rheological suspension, F1-Trac traction control, and an aluminum space frame chassis. (MMPC) is pleased to announcethat an Electric Vehicle or EV Cooperation Agreement with theDepartment of Energy (DOE) and MERALCO is underwaywhich mainly covers the use of Mitsubishi Motors’ zero emissionelectric car the i-MiEV (i-Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle),for evaluation and demonstration purposes.
