IntroductionThe conservation area in Walsham leWillows was originally designated byWest Suffolk County Council in 1974,and inherited by Mid Suffolk DistrictCouncil at its inception the same year.The Council has a duty to review itsconservation area designations from timeto time, and this appraisal examinesWalsham le Willows under a number ofdifferent headings as set out in EnglishHeritage’s new ‘Guidance onConservation Area Appraisals’ (2006).As such it is a straightforward appraisalof Walsham le Willows’s builtenvironment in conservation terms and isessentially an update on a draftdocument originally produced back in2000.This document is neither prescriptive noroverly descriptive, but more ademonstration of ‘quality of place’,sufficient for the briefing of the PlanningOfficer when assessing proposed worksin the area.
