Intrinsic Quality of BuildingsWhilst the village has a large number oflisted buildings, they are all grade II andmostly houses except for the Church of StMary, which is grade I.The church itself is mostly 14 th and 15 thCentury, Perpendicular throughout,although restored internally in 1878. Ithas good lozenge pattern flushwork tothe north porch and at low <strong>le</strong>vel alongthe north ais<strong>le</strong>. Pevsner praises the'Beautiful roof of low pitch withalternating tie beams and short hammerbeams, both very delicately ornamented.'Also listed, grade II, the UnitedReformed Church of 1844, formerly aWes<strong>le</strong>yan chapel, is built in red andwhite brick with a slate roof.The other grade II listed buildings arefor the most part timber-framed andrendered houses, with thatched or ti<strong>le</strong>droofs, dating from the 16 th and 17 thCenturies.South of the Church, on the Causeway,there is an interesting parish room of1902 and several estate cottages of thelate 19 th Century in brick and timberframe, all attributed to John Martineau.The village also boasts a Townhouse,now one house but originally tenementsfor the poor, as well as the formerGuildhall, now converted to threecottages. This last is unusually of timberframe construction with white weatherboardingand a panti<strong>le</strong> roof.
