Psychosis, trauma and dissociation:Conceptual, historical, empirical and clinical connectionsbetween posttraumatic, dissociative and psychotic disorders1-dags seminar med Andrew Moskowitz, PhDBergen 14. mai 2013Kursbeskrivelse:Over the past decade, considerable research has linked traumaticexperiences, including childhood trauma, to the development ofpsychotic symptoms. More recently, the concept of dissociation hasbeen connected to psychosis, particularly auditory hallucinations, aswell as to the historical conception of schizophrenia.

In this workshop, Professor Andrew Moskowitz, the lead editor of‘Psychosis, trauma and dissociation’ (Wiley, 2008) will discusshistorical, empirical, theoretical and clinical links between theconcepts of trauma, dissociation and psychosis, with particularemphasis on: 1) the historical and contemporary meaning of theterms trauma, dissociation and psychosis, 2) historical connectionsbetween dissociation, Bleuler’s schizophrenia and Kurt Schneider’s 1 strank symptoms of schizophrenia, 3) diagnostic issues betweenposttraumatic, dissociative and psychotic disorders, 4) researchevidence linking trauma with the development of delusions, anddissociation with the development of auditory hallucinations and 5)clinical approaches to working with delusions and hallucinationsinformed by a trauma/dissociation perspective. Participants shouldcome away with increased awareness of: a) the relevance of theconcepts of trauma and dissociation to an understanding ofpsychosis, b) signs, symptoms and experiences bearing on issues ofdifferential diagnosis and c) the range of clinical approaches toworking with psychotic symptoms from a trauma/dissociationperspective.Kursholder:Andrew Moskowitz, Ph.D., is Professor of Clinical Psychology atAarhus University in Denmark, and head of the Attachment,Dissociation and Traumatic Stress (ADiTS) research unit. He is thelead editor of the influential book, ‘Psychosis, trauma anddissociation: Emerging perspectives on severe psychopathology’(Wiley, 2008), which is going into a 2 nd edition. For a number ofyears, he has been committed to a research agenda dedicated tounderstanding connections between psychotic symptoms andschizophrenia on the one hand, and posttraumatic and dissociativedisorders on the other, and to developing clinical interventions basedon these new understandings.
