<strong>Psychosis</strong>, <strong>trauma</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>dissociation</strong>:Conceptual, historical, empirical <strong>and</strong> clinical connectionsbetween post<strong>trauma</strong>tic, dissociative <strong>and</strong> psychotic disorders1-dags seminar med Andrew Moskowitz, PhDBergen 14. mai 2013Kursbeskrivelse:Over the past decade, considerable research has linked <strong>trauma</strong>ticexperiences, including childhood <strong>trauma</strong>, to the development ofpsychotic symptoms. More recently, the concept of <strong>dissociation</strong> hasbeen connected to psychosis, particularly auditory hallucinations, aswell as to the historical conception of schizophrenia.


In this workshop, Professor Andrew Moskowitz, the lead editor of‘<strong>Psychosis</strong>, <strong>trauma</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>dissociation</strong>’ (Wiley, 2008) will discusshistorical, empirical, theoretical <strong>and</strong> clinical links between theconcepts of <strong>trauma</strong>, <strong>dissociation</strong> <strong>and</strong> psychosis, with particularemphasis on: 1) the historical <strong>and</strong> contemporary meaning of theterms <strong>trauma</strong>, <strong>dissociation</strong> <strong>and</strong> psychosis, 2) historical connectionsbetween <strong>dissociation</strong>, Bleuler’s schizophrenia <strong>and</strong> Kurt Schneider’s 1 strank symptoms of schizophrenia, 3) diagnostic issues betweenpost<strong>trauma</strong>tic, dissociative <strong>and</strong> psychotic disorders, 4) researchevidence linking <strong>trauma</strong> with the development of delusions, <strong>and</strong><strong>dissociation</strong> with the development of auditory hallucinations <strong>and</strong> 5)clinical approaches to working with delusions <strong>and</strong> hallucinationsinformed by a <strong>trauma</strong>/<strong>dissociation</strong> perspective. Participants shouldcome away with increased awareness of: a) the relevance of theconcepts of <strong>trauma</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>dissociation</strong> to an underst<strong>and</strong>ing ofpsychosis, b) signs, symptoms <strong>and</strong> experiences bearing on issues ofdifferential diagnosis <strong>and</strong> c) the range of clinical approaches toworking with psychotic symptoms from a <strong>trauma</strong>/<strong>dissociation</strong>perspective.Kursholder:Andrew Moskowitz, Ph.D., is Professor of Clinical Psychology atAarhus University in Denmark, <strong>and</strong> head of the Attachment,Dissociation <strong>and</strong> Traumatic Stress (ADiTS) research unit. He is thelead editor of the influential book, ‘<strong>Psychosis</strong>, <strong>trauma</strong> <strong>and</strong><strong>dissociation</strong>: Emerging perspectives on severe psychopathology’(Wiley, 2008), which is going into a 2 nd edition. For a number ofyears, he has been committed to a research agenda dedicated tounderst<strong>and</strong>ing connections between psychotic symptoms <strong>and</strong>schizophrenia on the one h<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> post<strong>trauma</strong>tic <strong>and</strong> dissociativedisorders on the other, <strong>and</strong> to developing clinical interventions basedon these new underst<strong>and</strong>ings.
