Policies and Procedures<strong>Spring</strong>/<strong>Summer</strong> <strong>2010</strong>AdmissionA student who plans to enroll in an approved degree or certificateprogram at <strong>SUNY</strong> <strong>Orange</strong> must apply and be admitted to the college.Admission is open to all applicants who are graduates of anaccredited high school or recipients of a state high school equivalencydiploma. (Students without a high school or equivalencydiploma may qualify for admission to the 24 credit hour programand should contact the Admissions office for program details.)Students previously admitted to the college who have not attendedfor two or more semesters must apply for readmission.Contact the Office of Admissions for applications for admission,readmission, or the 24 credit hour program. (845) 341-4030 orwww.sunyorange.edu .AdvisingAll degree-seeking students must obtain approval from an academicadvisor either in their department or in the Advising andCounseling Center prior to registering for classes.AttendanceAttendance is required in all courses. Work missed during anyperiod of absence, regardless of the reason for the absence, must bemade up by the student (see course syllabi for details). Instructorsare authorized to lower grades for class absences and may withdrawstudents from non-developmental courses for excessive absences.Instructors shall not lower grades for absences for religious observancenor, provided the instructor’s permission is given in advance,for participation in athletics or other college-sponsored events.If illness, accident or similar circumstances make it impossiblefor a student to attend classes for three or more consecutive days,it is his or her responsibility to notify the Office of Records andRegistration at once. The Records and Registration Office will, inturn, notify each instructor. However, it is the student’s responsibilityto contact each instructor to make up missed work.Current or future awards of financial aid may be affected if a studentdoes not attend classes for which he or she is registered.Audit of CourseStudents who do not wish to earn credit or grade should completea special permission card available at the Records and RegistrationOffice when they register for courses. Students may, however,change status from audit to credit or vice versa, if they file thespecial permission card by the end of the third week of classes (orits equivalent). Some courses, such as Nursing, are not subject toaudit.Those students who are receiving financial aid should consultwith the Financial Aid Office before registering for or changing toaudit status.Instructors are not required to evaluate the work of audit students.Certifications of Enrollment/Attendance orCertifications of Full-Time/Part-Time StatusStudents who require official certifications from the Records andRegistration Office regarding enrollment/attendance or full-time/part-time status should submit signed written requests allowingthe Records and Registration Office to release such information inaccordance with the Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act.Certifications of Full-Time/Part-Time Status are done on afirst-come, first-served basis. Certifications of Enrollment/Attendance are not sent until after the end of the third week ofclasses. If receipt by the requesting agency is needed by a specificdeadline, students should so state in their requests.To certify enrollment, tuition and fees must be paid and allstop/holds must be cleared from the student’s records.College Closing and DelayAnnouncements of College closings and delays are carried on arearadio stations, posted on the College website, www.sunyorange.edu,and available by calling (845) 344-6222. Students may also sign-upfor email notifications of College closings at www.sunyorange.edu/alert.Classes at off-campus high school locations (Monroe WoodburyHigh School, Port Jervis High School, and Warwick Valley HighSchool) will be cancelled if on-campus classes do not meet; if<strong>SUNY</strong> <strong>Orange</strong> does not cancel evening classes as a result of inclementweather, evening classes held at off-campus locations will followthat High School’s inclement weather closing announcement.Course Placement AssessmentFirst-time college student admitted to <strong>SUNY</strong> <strong>Orange</strong> participate ina required Course Placement Assessment to determine skill levels inreading, writing, and mathematics prior to their first registration. Aphoto ID is required and there is a $25 non-refundable fee chargedfor the test. Payment of this fee can be applied towards tuition if thestudent subsequently enrolls at <strong>SUNY</strong> <strong>Orange</strong>.A waiver from the English portion of the Assessment is grantedto new students who can document their completion of FreshmanEnglish I with a grade of C or better. The Math portion of theAssessment is granted for completion of a college-level math with agrade of C or better. Waiver of the assessment test does not guaranteetransferability of the credits.For a current test schedule and/or complete details on the waiverpolicy, please contact the Advising and Counseling Center at (845)341-4070 or via the web at www.sunyorange.edu/counselingNote: Students enrolled in the 24 credit hour program who areseeking financial aid are required to take this assessment in order tosatisfy the Title IV Ability to Benefit requirements.Disability ServicesThe Office of Disability Services (ODS) provides support servicesand coordinates reasonable accommodations for students with documenteddisabilities under ADA and Section 504 of the RehabilitationAct. Students are responsible for identifying themselves to the ODSoffice and providing documentation that is current and appropriate.In addition, the office serves as a resource to faculty and staff, worksto dispel negative and limiting stereotypes and promotes a campusenvironment that is sensitive, accepting and responsive to the needsof all <strong>SUNY</strong> <strong>Orange</strong> students. The Office is located in Room 301,Shepard Student Center; 341-4077. In Newburgh services are availableby calling (845) 341-4034.83
