www.sunyorange.eduFinal Examination Policyand Last Day of ClassesFinal examinations are not required in all courses. In the Fallsemester, for the mandatory fifteenth week, and in the <strong>Spring</strong> semesterduring the optional sixteenth week, a special schedule is developedfor the day classes to accommodate those classes which willgive a comprehensive final examination. Final examinations will notnecessarily be held on the same day or at the same time, during theFall/<strong>Spring</strong> semesters, as the regularly scheduled course. The specialschedule for final examinations of day classes is developed anddistributed by the director of academic services at the tenth week ofthe semester. Examinations for evening classes are usually held inthe last week, the same day of the week and at the same time of day,during the fall/spring semesters, as the regularly scheduled course.See the academic calendar, page 4, for the dates for final examinations.Financial AidAll degree-seeking students enrolled in approved programs areeligible for financial aid consideration. All enrolled courses mustapply to you major\degree. Students requesting aid must completethe FAFSA (Free application for Federal Student Aid) once eachacademic year (<strong>2010</strong>-2011).**Do not go to fafsa.com as this site charges a fee and is NOTrecommended by the federal government or <strong>SUNY</strong><strong>Orange</strong>.Upon submission of a completed FAFSA, a student who is a residentof NY State should use the link to NY State found on the confirmationpage to complete the TAP web application.To avoid delays and to ensure having financial aid available toassist with payment of tuition and fees, students are encouragedto apply for financial aid as early as possible. Please note being inattendance in all enrolled course(s) is imperative. Non attendance inone or all of your classes can negatively impact your eligibility forfinancial aid.New students must have a final, official high school transcript orofficial GED Score Report on file with the Admissions Office beforeany financial aid is awarded. Students who do not hold either a HSdiploma or GED must take and pass the ATB test before financialaid is awarded.For complete information on aid programs contact the FinancialAid Office at (845) 341-4190 or www.sunyorange.edu/financialaid.Fresh Start PolicyThis policy is intended to provide a ”fresh start“ for students withpoor grades who either want to change to a new program, or, havingbeen away from the College for at least one year, want to resumetheir original plan of study. Please note that this application willnot be reviewed until at least four (4) weeks into the returningsemester.An eligible student will have his or her CQPA re-computed byexcluding final grades earned in courses taken at <strong>SUNY</strong> <strong>Orange</strong> thatare not explicitly required in the student’s intended degree or certificateprogram. The student may apply for this fresh start opportunityat any time during her or his career. However, a Fresh Start willbe awarded only once. If the application is denied by the Directorof Academic Services, a written appeal may be made to the VicePresident for Academic Affairs.Application of the Fresh Start Policy means:• Grades will be omitted from the recalculation of a CQPA until theCQPA is 2.0 or the smallest possible number above 2.0. However,the original grade remains on the transcript.• Courses and grades omitted from the re-calculation will beidentified on the transcript by the ”#“ symbol printed beside therecalculated course(s).To be eligible for a fresh start, a student must meet ALL of thefollowing criteria:• Be matriculated in a registered degree or certificate program at the College.• Have changed curriculum, or have been out of the College for at least onecalendar year.• Have a CQPA lower than 2.0 at the time of the request.• Acknowledge in writing the restrictions of this policy.• Not have had any courses ”discounted“ under the previous policy.Honors ProgramThe Honors Program has been developed to offer highly motivatedand talented students an opportunity to develop their potential morefully as they study for the Associate degree. Honors courses willoffer enrichment through alternative texts, outside readings, researchprojects, and abstract concept development beyond the traditionalcourse section. Honors sections of courses are identified by theletter ”H“ at the end of the course number code in the Schedule ofCourses. For more information on the program and eligibility rules,contact the Honors Coordinator at (845) 341-4004.ImmunizationNew York State law requires that all students born on or afterJanuary 1, 1957 who wish to enroll for six (6) credits or more in anysemester provide proof of immunity to measles, mumps, and rubella.A form is provided in this course schedule.In addition, all students, regardless of age, must sign and returnthe Meningitis Response Form available at www.sunyorange.edu/admissions , in this brochure, or in the Health Services Office.Immunization Forms must be on file in the Health Services Officeprior to registration.For questions related to immunization requirements and acceptabledocumentation contact the Health Services Office at (845) 341-4870.Make-Up of Classes Cancelled due to InclementWeatherEvening classes canceled due to inclement weather will berescheduled. Students will be advised by the instructor of the timeand day of these sessions. Generally, a make-up session is held onthe Friday evening of the next week.Maximum Credit LoadIn general, students may schedule their classes in the day orevening, or both, in accordance with their particular needs. To registerfor 20 or more credits in a semester, or 9 or more credits in asummer session, the permission of the appropriate Associate VicePresident is required. Twelve or more credits in a semester constitutesa full-time course load; one-half credit to 11.5 credits is designatedas part-time study.84
