<strong>EPrescribing</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Electronic</strong> <strong>Transfer</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Prescriptions</strong>: an International Rev<strong>ie</strong>wHealth Information <strong>and</strong> Quality Authorityproducts in the Denmark, with 60 suppl<strong>ie</strong>rs <strong>and</strong> over 100 products ach<strong>ie</strong>vingcertification.As depicted in Figure 7, message volumes have been increasing year on year withover 160,000 prescription messages sent during 2010. It is estimated that almost88% <strong>of</strong> the total number <strong>of</strong> possible prescriptions are generated <strong>and</strong> messagedelectronically in Denmark, with one region (North Jutl<strong>and</strong>) ach<strong>ie</strong>ving 100% (61) .Messages are predominantly sent as EDIFACT messages, but there is a gradualmigration to XML-based messages. Of note, HL7 v2 was assessed in the early 2000sas a possible messaging st<strong>and</strong>ard by Medcom but was rejected mainly on thegrounds <strong>of</strong> poor vendor support for the st<strong>and</strong>ard at that time.Figure 7. Denmark – ePrescription messaging volume(61)Other initiatives which facilitated ePrescribing in Denmark include:• the existence <strong>of</strong> an unique health identif<strong>ie</strong>r for pat<strong>ie</strong>nts in Denmark since 1966• the Danish Medicines Agency which regulates the used <strong>of</strong> medicines inDenmark produces a single national file <strong>of</strong> all medicines every two weeks <strong>and</strong>this is distributed to s<strong>of</strong>tware suppl<strong>ie</strong>rs. The file contains information aboutdrugs including name, content, substitutions, price, mapping to ATC codes<strong>and</strong> codes for dosage. There is almost 100% adoption <strong>of</strong> this file by vendors<strong>of</strong> GP <strong>and</strong> pharmacy systems thus facilitating interoperability <strong>and</strong> ePrescribing.• A national portal launched in 2003 designed to provide pat<strong>ie</strong>nts with servicesincluding v<strong>ie</strong>wing <strong>of</strong> their hospital records, booking <strong>of</strong> appointments, orderingmedications <strong>and</strong> renewing prescriptions• proactive approach by MEDCOM to train s<strong>of</strong>tware suppl<strong>ie</strong>rs in thespecifications developed by MEDCOM.37
