His <strong>the</strong>sis was Quantum DotBi<strong>of</strong>unctionalization. Nathaniel was alsogiven <strong>the</strong> Biochemistry Award sponsoredby <strong>the</strong> <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> Chemistry.UNIVERSITY HONORS: The following biology/biochemistrystudents were awardeddegrees with honors from <strong>the</strong> RenéeCrown <strong>University</strong> Honors Program. Twelvegraduating seniors were named SUScholars at <strong>the</strong> May 15 Commencement.This included biology major SarahWendel and biochemistry major Qi WenLi. A description <strong>of</strong> Sarah’s and Qi’sachievements and activities as described inSU News May 9, <strong>2011</strong>, is as follows:Sarah Ka<strong>the</strong>rine Jane Wendel, a biologymajor carrying a Chinese studies minorin <strong>the</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Arts and Sciences, is aRemembrance Scholar and participatesin <strong>the</strong> Renée Crown <strong>University</strong> HonorsProgram. Also, she is active as a sciencetutor for undergraduates. Sarah’s threestudy abroad experiences include Englishlanguage mentoring in Hong Kong andhospital and clinic internships in Cusco,Peru, and Tanzania, Africa. Her work inPeru was supported by a Mark and PearleClements Internship Award. Locally, Sarahcurrently serves as an emergency roomobserver at Upstate <strong>University</strong> Hospital,shadowing an attending physician inpediatrics. Sarah also volunteered at CrouseHospital. She serves on <strong>the</strong> executive board<strong>of</strong> Habitat for Humanity’s SU chapter andadvises students traveling to Hong Kongabout aspects <strong>of</strong> life abroad. Note: A pr<strong>of</strong>ile<strong>of</strong> Sarah appears in this issue <strong>of</strong> BIO@SU.Qi Wen Li, a biochemistry major in<strong>the</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Arts and Sciences and aRemembrance Scholar, discovered herpassion for scientific research whileworking in <strong>the</strong> laboratory group ledby Robert Doyle, associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor<strong>of</strong> chemistry, with whom she is now apublished researcher. A McNair, Ornstein,and Crown Scholar, Qi’s research hasbeen supported by <strong>the</strong> iLEARN programat SU. She undertook summer researchat Yale <strong>University</strong> through a Mark andPearle Clements Internship Award andpursued research abroad at <strong>the</strong> Graz<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Technology in Austria aspart <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> National Science Foundation’sInternational Research Experience forUndergraduates program. Qi plans tocontinue her studies in a doctoral programin biochemistry and molecular biophysicsat <strong>the</strong> California Institute <strong>of</strong> Technology.NEWS OF OTHERUNDERGRADUATESCROWN, WISE-MARCUS 50-YEARFRIENDSHIP AWARDS: These awards arecompetitive grants awarded by <strong>the</strong> HonorsProgram to aid students completing <strong>the</strong>ircapstone projects.
