GIVINGTOBIOLOGYAT SU:In this issue <strong>of</strong> BIO@SU we are continuing our appeal to our many alumni and friends for yourhelp in supporting <strong>the</strong> programs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Biology</strong>. In <strong>the</strong>se times <strong>of</strong> fiscal austeritythroughout <strong>the</strong> country, it should come as no surprise that our teaching and research needs haveoutpaced direct <strong>University</strong> funding. Whe<strong>the</strong>r you donate regularly to SU or are considering a first timegift, we hope that you will consider designating your contribution to support biology at SU. Your supportwill directly benefit <strong>the</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> our teaching programs and research.Our needs are diverse and encompass all aspects <strong>of</strong> our program, so we have decided to concentrate our efforts on three areas.Your donation to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Biology</strong> Gift Fund can be designated for use in one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> following ways.Emeritus Chairs ProgramHonors <strong>the</strong> efforts <strong>of</strong> previous <strong>Biology</strong> <strong>Department</strong> Chairs John M. Russell, H. Richard Levy, David Sullivan and JudithFoster and provides <strong>the</strong> <strong>Biology</strong> <strong>Department</strong> Chair with flexibility to meet critical needs, such as one-time purchases <strong>of</strong> majorscientific equipment, support for new course development and rewarding outstanding achievements <strong>of</strong> biology faculty andinstructors in teaching and research.Undergraduate ProgramsSupports opportunities for undergraduates to participate in field study and unique research opportunities in class, withfaculty members and summer research projects. Supports improvements in undergraduate teaching facilities and equipmentin laboratories, independent research opportunities, travel to research meetings and <strong>the</strong>development <strong>of</strong> new courses addressing <strong>the</strong> most contemporary issues in biology.Graduate ProgramsSupports opportunities for graduate students to travel to national andinternational meetings, participate in advanced courses at major researchfacilities, and rewards outstanding students in <strong>the</strong> program with researchfellowships.With your help, we can ensure that biology faculty and students have <strong>the</strong>resources <strong>the</strong>y need to excel.
