DJohn A’mico, Jr.Freeholder in charge <strong>of</strong>Planning, Commerce & EducationPhone 732- 431-7396Susan O’Brien, Confidential AideFREEHOLDER JOHN D’AMICO, a graduate <strong>of</strong> HarvardCollege and Harvard Law School, began his distinguishedlegal career in Freehold as a judicial law clerk. Earlyin his career he practiced law in Red Bank, after which hebecame vice president and counsel for a major insurancecompany.In the 1970's, John D’Amico was well known throughoutthe state as a rail commuter advocate. He was founder andchairman <strong>of</strong> the Irate Shore Commuters and ShoreCommuter Coalition, serving on committees concernedwith the improvement <strong>of</strong> public transportation and spearheadingmany needed reforms.John D’Amico served for two terms as a Councilman inOceanport and two terms as a <strong>Monmouth</strong> <strong>County</strong> Freeholder. During his tenure asFreeholder, he founded the <strong>Monmouth</strong> <strong>County</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Transportation and theOffice <strong>of</strong> Recycling. Additionally, he initiated <strong>Monmouth</strong> <strong>County</strong>’s “Greenbelt” programfor the preservation <strong>of</strong> open space and the protection <strong>of</strong> drinking water, and aided the<strong>Monmouth</strong> <strong>County</strong> Prosecutor in the creation <strong>of</strong> the first environment crimes unit inNew Jersey.John D’Amico served in the New Jersey Senate in 1988 and 1989, during which timehe sponsored several key bills on transportation and the environment, including a GreenAcres Bond Act and the Clean Water Enforcement Act.In 1992, he was appointed by the governor as a Judge <strong>of</strong> the Superior Court <strong>of</strong> NewJersey, sitting in the Family Part <strong>of</strong> the Chancery Division and in the Civil Division in<strong>Monmouth</strong> <strong>County</strong>. While on the bench, he developed a new, streamlined trial procedurecalled an “Expedited Jury Trial,” which is now in use statewide. He also authored severalpublished opinions and a number <strong>of</strong> articles on legal subjects.On August 1, 2003, Judge D’Amico was appointed Chairman <strong>of</strong> the New JerseyState Parole Board, where he reformed the Board’s policies and procedures. He establisheda Community Partnership unit to work with volunteer agencies for the successful integration<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>fenders in society.Judge D’Amico retired from the Parole Board in March 2007, and became a consultantto the United States Department <strong>of</strong> Justice, National Institute <strong>of</strong> Corrections, onparole reform.
