M unicipalities<strong>Monmouth</strong> <strong>County</strong> -53 Municipalities - One CommunityPLEASE BE ADVISED THAT ALL TELEPHONE NUMBERSWITHOUT A LISTED AREA CODE MUST BE DIALED WITH 732THIS SECTION IS DEVOTED to the 53 municipalities that comprise the 471.74 square miles <strong>of</strong><strong>Monmouth</strong> <strong>County</strong>. It lists addresses, telephone numbers and most <strong>of</strong> the major <strong>of</strong>ficials ineach town.UNDER CURRENT LAW, there are four basic forms <strong>of</strong> municipal governments, each derivingits powers from the New Jersey Legislature. The four basic forms <strong>of</strong> government are: township,borough, city and town. In addition, the Legislature has enacted the "Faulkner Act," which enablesmunicipalities to select a form <strong>of</strong> government which is a variation on the four basic forms. Inaddition, a fifth form <strong>of</strong> government, the village form, exists in just one municipality in New Jersey,the Village <strong>of</strong> Loch Arbour, in <strong>Monmouth</strong> <strong>County</strong>.IN MONMOUTH COUNTY there are 37 boroughs, 11 townships and two cities. The townships<strong>of</strong> Aberdeen, Howell and Ocean are governed by the township form <strong>of</strong> government, but undervariations <strong>of</strong> other forms. Ocean Grove, a unique community <strong>of</strong> great historical significance, ispart <strong>of</strong> Neptune Township.ALSO, we have included some <strong>of</strong> the more commonly used names <strong>of</strong> neighborhoods andtowns within our "<strong>of</strong>ficial" 53 municipalities. Most are still in use today; some have disappearedaltogether. You will find our list at the end <strong>of</strong> the Municipalities Section.
