GENBAND QUANTiX DSC“Secure and Scalable Diameter Signaling Controller”OVERVIEWSubscriber demand for bandwidth-hungry apps has acceleratedthe use of mobile services and data on mobile network. Diametersignaling—which acts as the central nervous system of IMS and LTEnetworks in controlling voice and data sessions and supporting trafficpolicies—is exploding in volume and complexity. High-bandwidthapps can create hundreds of Diameter signaling messages persession, per subscriber. Unless this massive signaling growth andcomplexity of signaling is managed, the network performance andscalability of next generation IMS and LTE networks can be severelyimpacted.GENBAND QUANTIX DSCGENBAND QUANTiX DSC (Diameter Signaling Controller) assistsservice providers in addressing the explosion of Diameter signalingvolume within the IMS and LTE core, by supporting millions ofconcurrent sessions and hundreds of millions of subscribers; andensuring security, routing, and interworking for Diameter messageexchanges within and across IMS and LTE networks. DSC providesDiameter protocol routing, mediation and interworking functions, allowing service providers to manage legacy to LTE and LTE to LTEroaming seamlessly. The QUANTiX DSC centralizes signaling and Diameter routing, trafficmanagement, and load balancing tasks to scale and grow IMSand LTE networks incrementally and cost effectively, while increasingresiliency and reliability to support subscribers’ ever-increasing serviceand broadband demands. It supports multiple standards basedfunctions and applications in IMS and LTE networks — all on a singleunified platform with centralized management.Diameter Routing Agent (DRA) for scalable centralizedrouting of Diameter messages in a multivendor, multi-node environmentwithin a service provider’s IMS and LTE coreDiameter Edge Agent (DEA) for secure exchange ofauthentication, authorization, and subscriber policy across LTEnetworks (for roaming)Diameter Interworking Function (IWF) to ensureinteroperability between different vendor implementations of Diameterand translate legacy SS7 signaling protocols to Diameter and viceversa, to solve interworking and connectivity challenges with legacynetworksDiameter Load Balancer to mitigate any congestion andhandle scalability of Diameter server nodes such as PCRF, HSS, OSSIntegrated Diameter and SIP SignalingFor LTE RoamingIn addition to providing the standalone Diameter routing functions inLTE network, QUANTiX DSC can be combined with GENBAND’smarket-leading Session Border Controller (SBC), to provide mobileservice providers and IPX carriers an integrated SIP and Diametersolutions that enables secure, seamless, and scalable global VoLTEand data LTE roaming. The combined solution, delivered on acommon hardware platform, provides context-aware intelligent routing, scalable handling of SIP and Diameter traffic, security, and seamlessconnectivity to an IMS/LTE network resulting in a simple, cost-effectivedeployment of rich LTE voice, multimedia and data services.PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITIESDYNAMIC ROUTING FOR SIGNALING PROTOCOLS• A subscriber context–aware dynamic routing engine• Routing according to any content of a Diameter message, orany combination of AVPs (attribute-value pairs), and source• Full support for session binding (for use cases such as policycharging and control, or shared family data plans)• Full support for session binding between protocols such asDiameter and HTTP• HSS resolution (typical routing example based on IMSI) usinginternal or external SLF or directory services• Routing rules are based on various criteria, including:• Protocol type• A combination of AVPs and their values• Initial request source/destination• Multi-point routing such as Gx and Rx interfaces routing basedon IPCAN session

GENBAND QUANTiX DSC“Secure and Scalable Diameter Signaling Controller”ADVANCED DIAMETER LOAD BALANCINGThe DSC provides multiple, advanced Diameter bidirectional loadbalancing capabilities for any parameter (AVP) content combinationsuch as MSISDN, quality of service, rating, location, IP address, andothers. It uses the following load balancing methods:• Round robin• Weighted round robin• Contextual• Fast response time• Least-loaded• External policyEnhanced Security with a DEAThe QUANTiX DSC also offers an advanced DEA that extends itscapabilities in network signaling for tighter security and normalizedfunctionality in roaming, billing, and third-party content scenarios. The DSC’s DEA function provides:• Topology hiding• A normalization engine that ensures that only supported AVPsand content enter the network• High security and failover protection by masquerading thenetwork to prevent unauthorized access• Guaranteed accuracy of incoming and outgoing messages withmechanisms to either fix or reject the problematic messages• Network protection from overload as well as from a drain onnetwork resourcesDIAMETER GATEWAY – MESSAGETRANSFORMATION ENGINE• Interoperability and interworking between different Diametervendors• Translates legacy signaling protocols to Diameter and viceversa• Using flexible Diameter data dictionaries, the QUANTiX DSCprovides support for RADIUS, SS7, LDAP, SQL, HTTP, GTP’, JMS,and other protocols• Simultaneously support variants of the same interface found invarious releases of 3GPP standards and vendor software• Supports more than 50 Diameter interfacesCENTRALIZED MANAGEMENTREPORTING & ANALYTICSThe QUANTiX DSC’s Real-Time Message Manager (RMM) helpsservice providers ease administrative and management burdens byproviding centralized management of distributed DSC sites, reportingand analysis, monitoring, and fault management.• Centralized configuration for multiple DSC sites• Web-based management console and dashboard for viewingreports and analytics• Reporting and analysis for statistical analysis and in-depth trafficinspection• Statistics — collects statistics for different message flows(from, to) and statistical information about each messageincluding status, average round-trip time (RTT), andaverage size• Short-term tracing — provides a traffic tracingtool that records the whole message according to userpredefinedrules that are based on specific AVPs in theprotocol or message flow, allowing for deeper messageinspection for debugging purposes• System-wide reporting — control plane data ispresented through system-wide reports and graphs withoptional filtering for statistics or short-term tracing• Valuable statistics on users’ network usage can be used toinform and enhance marketing promotions and campaigns.Statistics collected per-instance:• Peer—Received/sent messages, pending requests, RTT,time-out (t/o), and more• Node—Concurrent sessions, average threads load• Flow—Selection/failure statistics, RTT, distribution ofrouting, and more• Routing—Selection/failure statistics, RTT, and distributionof transformation• Transformation—Selection/failure statistics, and RTT• Alarm types—Frequency and distribution• Testing and Simulation Suite - a comprehensive environment fortesting automation including validation of stress, load, stability, and scalability• Centralized system monitoring in real-time of hardware andsoftware states, performance counters, alarms, and syslogmessages• Built-in health monitoring to identify overload conditions or otherabnormal behavior of the remote Diameter peers, and then actsaccordingly
