6. Personnel<br />

At the end of 2011, 764 members of staff<br />

were employed at IFM-GEOMAR. This<br />

means that the overall number of employees<br />

was almost the same as in the previous<br />

year. 50% of the employees work in the<br />

scientific field. Women represent 46% of<br />

the total number of staff and approx. 40%<br />

of the scientists. The percentage of women<br />

among the professors is still rather low, but<br />

was increased in the course of new appointments<br />

(see below). 72% of the employment<br />

contracts have a fixed period; about 80% in<br />

the scientific field. Personnel development,<br />

subdivided into organisational units, is depicted<br />

in Fig. 1.6.<br />
