UPPER DEPARTMENT: Grade 5 & 6During the term some of the students in grade five visited the Rialto Toweras a part of Education Week activities. It was an opportunity for the studentsto acquaint themselves with Melbourne and its surrounds. Although itwas quite foggy and the weather wasn’t perfect for viewing it did notdampen our spirits. The students had a good time sipping hot chocolatewhile they waited for the fog to clear up and managed to get a glimpse ofwhat lay beneath and some of the buildings within close proximity.RIALTO TOWERS TRIVIAThe Observation Deck was opened to the public on July 20 1994.There are 1254 stairs to the Observation Deck.The Rialto soars 253 metres (823 ft).The Towers standon 75 huge concretecaissons(legs) attached torock 20m belowthe building.If a kilogramblock wasdropped from theroof it would take7.9 seconds to hitthe ground at250kph.It takes approximately40 secondsto reachLevel 55 in ourfast lifts. Thelifts travel at25kph or 7.1 metresper second.Gr 6’s onexcursionto CERESAs a part of ourIndonesian programstudents had theopportunity to visit CERES, a place where Indonesiacomes alive. Students were involved in various activitiesinvolving a Kulit puppet show, participate in traditionaldance while dressed in their cultural outfits, playinggames dating back to many years and finally the Batikart activity which students enjoyed mostly.Being a part in this lifestyle allowed students to experiencea culture of diversity.Behind the NewsStudents in grade 6 this term have thoroughlyenjoyed being media moguls. Wehave been watching BTN on ABC eachweek to develop an understanding of thecurrent issues in the media locally andinternationally. We also get to talk about interesting events, peopleand places around the world. There is also a website for studentsto explore : http://www.abc.net.au/news/btn/. Don’t getleft behind. Know the news :)Chess TutorsWanted !We are looking at providingmore Clubs programs for ourstudents. We hope to have aChess Club operating soon andare in much need of a volunteerChess expert.
