INTRODUCTIONThe <strong>National</strong> <strong>Board</strong> of <strong>Examination</strong>s (<strong>NBE</strong>) was established in 1975 by theGovernment of India with the prime objective of improving the quality of theMedical Education by establishing high and uniform standards of postgraduateexaminations in modern medicine on an all India basis.The <strong>Board</strong> conducts postgraduate and postdoctoral examinations in approveddisciplines leading to the award of Diplomate of <strong>National</strong> <strong>Board</strong>. The MedicalCouncil of India has laid down standards for postgraduate examinations conductedby various medical colleges and affiliated to concerned universities, yet the levelsof proficiency and standards of evaluation vary considerably in these institutions,leading to lack of uniform and acceptable benchmarks for assessment andqualification.The setting up of a <strong>National</strong> Body to conduct postgraduate medical examinationand training has provided common standards and mechanism of evaluation ofminimum level of desired knowledge and competencies and fulfillment of theobjectives for which postgraduate courses has been started in medical institutions.Moreover, intra country and international comparison is facilitated with the availabilityof commonly accepted evaluation mechanism like the DNB. The Diplomate <strong>National</strong><strong>Board</strong> final examinations are conducted on all India basis on standardized formatand multiple assessment tools are used for assessing the candidate.RECOGNITION OF DNB QUALIFICATIONSThe Nomenclature of the qualification awarded by the <strong>National</strong> <strong>Board</strong> of<strong>Examination</strong>s is “Diplomate of <strong>National</strong> <strong>Board</strong>”. The list of recognisedqualifications awarded by the <strong>Board</strong> in various Broad and Super specialities asapproved by the Government of India and included in the First Schedule of IMCAct 1956 is as at Annexure I.As per the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956; the power to recognize medicalqualification and determine their equivalence rests with central government.The Diplomate qualifications awarded by the <strong>National</strong> <strong>Board</strong> of <strong>Examination</strong>s areequated with the postgraduate and post doctorate degrees awarded by otherIndian Universities for all purposes including appointment to teaching posts aslecturer/Assistant Professor by the Government of India, Ministry of Health andFamily Welfare; vide their notifications issued from time to time.The holders of <strong>Board</strong>’s qualification awarded after an examination i.e. DNB areeligible to be considered for specialist’s post/faculty in any Hospital including atraining/teaching institution on a teaching post as faculty member.Note : Possession/Use of Mobile Phones/Electronic Devices is strictly prohibited in the premises of <strong>NBE</strong> <strong>Examination</strong> Centres.Candidates Shall be liable for penal action for Possession/Use of Mobile Phones/Electronic Devices6
