The project idea was so successful that the adult councilimplemented a biography webpage as well.Johnny Redesign ProjectAdult and Pediatric Council members convened to discuss possible improvements to the currentpatient gowns. Improvement result: Jimmy Fund Clinic staff can specifically order the patternsthat patients prefer and eliminate the less popular designs from the shelves.Side by SideAn award-winning quarterly patient newsletter that was first published in 1999. Its purpose is toshare inspirational stories of patients and family members, promote the Council and provideupdates on the Council’s projects, highlight support services offered inside and outside thehospital setting, and advertise a calendar of events at DFCI/CHB. Meeting times vary, as mostwork on Side by Side is done via telephone, e-mail and/or fax. Process for Becoming a PPFAC Member• Prospective member is provided an information packet and asked to complete an application(available online, in the Volunteer Services office, and PFAC office)• The completed application is forwarded to the PFAC program manager, the director ofPediatric Psychosocial Support, and the PPFAC co-chairs for their review• If initial appropriateness of “fit” is determined, one of the co-chairpersons contacts theprospective member to answer any questions and invites him/her to attend an upcomingCouncil meeting. The co-chair requests that the prospective member arrive a half-hour beforethe meeting for an informal interview with both co-chairs. (If there are concerns aboutappropriateness of “fit” upon initial review of application, the PFAC program manager willcontact the applicant directly.)• Once prospective member has attended a Council meeting, the PFAC program manager, thedirector of Pediatric Psychosocial Support, and the PPFAC co-chairs make finaldetermination of membership.• PFAC program manager contacts prospective member to notify him/her of decision.Once accepted, prospective member is required to complete DFCI’s Volunteer Servicesorientation program, including a health clearance with the Institute’s Occupational HealthDepartment and background check. This process is mandatory and Council membership iscontingent upon fulfilling these requirements.A PPFAC orientation session will be conducted for each new member on the day of his/her firstCouncil meeting. Orientation sessions will be conducted at 5:00 p.m., prior to the 5:30 p.m. startof a monthly meeting.
