Dear Council Member,Thank you for joining the Pediatric Patient and Family Advisory Council, a partnership of parents, family members,teen patients, and staff working together to assure the best care for patients of Dana-Farber/Children’s HospitalCancer Care.Over fifty years ago, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Children’s Hospital Boston joined together as pioneers tooffer leading-edge, compassionate care to children with cancer. Since then, we have dramatically improvedsurvivorship for childhood cancers and increased our understanding of how to learn from patients and families aboutideal pediatric care.We are grateful for the opportunity to work closely with our patients and families to design and delivercomprehensive programs. Together we strive to promote an environment that focuses on the needs of our patientsand their families; it is through collaboration that we are better able to understand our strengths and opportunities forgrowth. Your voice ensures that we are infusing the patient’s perspective into everything we do.Since the Council’s inception in 1999, our members have been instrumental in guiding our decision-makingpractices, from patient safety efforts to the design of clinical facilities to quality improvement initiatives toeducational materials and beyond. Their presence on committees such as the Pediatric Clinical Operations Group,Quality Improvement/Risk Management, and Clinical Operations have not only been helpful, but critical.We recognize the extensive time commitment of Council membership—monthly meetings and additional committeeand project work—and we truly appreciate your dedication to this important work.Welcome to the Council. IntroductionMembers of the Pediatric Patient and Family Advisory Council (PPFAC) at Dana-Farber/Children’s Hospital Cancer Care (DF/CHCC) are advocates for patients and theirfamilies. We are part of the process to improve the care and service that patients and familiesreceive at our ambulatory site, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI), and as inpatients, atChildren’s Hospital Boston (CHB). We define ourselves as liaisons, activists, communicators,consultants, and most of all, partners. We work to ensure that the patient and family perspectiveis considered when programs and policies are developed and implemented.We serve on standing and project committees at all levels of (DF/CHCC). We learn about whatis working well and where there are opportunities for improvement. PPFAC members play anessential role in the delivery of quality care provided to our patients. We are fully integrated inthe work of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and our partner hospitals. From the beginning, staffhave sought the Council’s assistance and feedback on issues relating to the delivery of cancercare and treatment.The following pages describe the work of the PPFAC in greater detail. If you are a new memberto the Council, we welcome you.
