This, together withstaff whose responsibilities include tutorial/pastoralsupport, ensures that all students will belong to asmall part of a large organisation.We also ensure individual needs are not overlookedby keeping class sizes relatively small and givingevery learner a personal tutor. It verymuch depends on the individual concerned. <strong>The</strong>benefits of moving on from school to a more adultlearning environment will vary from one individual toanother. Many young people by the end of year 11find they are ready for a college environment, whichoffers greater experience of the ‘real world’ and actsas a great preparation for employment or university.<strong>The</strong> <strong>College</strong> offers the widest selection of coursesin the area and our post 16 teaching professionalshave specialist expertise and, where applicable,recent industry-related knowledge. <strong>The</strong> breadth ofqualifications and <strong>The</strong> <strong>College</strong> learning experience isvalued and recognised by employers and universities.Will I be given progress reports?We keep you informed through parents’ eveningsand/or written reports. Students’ progress is verycarefully monitored and regular tutorials will ensurelearning goals are being met. Every full time studentworks towards their Individual Learning Plan which isagreed and monitored by the student and tutor on theeILP. If you are concerned at any stage we encourageyou to contact the relevant Head of Area. Your viewsand comments will always be welcome.What about hours of attendance andabsences?Classes for full time students will not normally betimetabled to begin before 9am or finish after 5.30pmbut this may vary according to the course. Eachstudent has an individual timetable and it’s a goodidea to make sure you have a copy of this so that youknow when they will be in college.On average, a student will have between 15 – 16hours a week of contact time (teaching hours) spreadthrough the week. Every student will also havecollege work to complete at home. This will include,for example, course work, assignments, research andindividual study.We expect every student to have 100% attendanceand to give 100% commitment to completion of allcoursework, homework and class work. Registration istaken at every lesson. Students must notify their tutorof any absence. Poor attendance and/or punctualitywill be dealt with through the ‘Shaping Behaviour andPerformance’ procedures. A copy of this document canbe obtained from Student Services.How large are classes and tutor groups?In most cases classes will be much smaller than atschool. Generally classes have an average of 18students - large enough to generate a lively exchangeof views yet small enough to ensure personalattention. Every student belongs to a small tutorialgroup led by a personal tutor.Does the college monitor its learners?Yes, very carefully. At <strong>The</strong> <strong>College</strong> we have strictrules and codes of conduct. We expect learners tobe dedicated and to work hard and have a mutuallyrespectful approach to their tutors and fellowstudents. Good manners are highly valued.
