While virtuallyall councils have settheir mill rates, some arefinalizing their annualbudgets in an effort to keepup with the expandingeconomy and to meet thedemands of incoming residents.Fourteen communitieswere contacted about thisyear’s taxes and in Allan,a moderate increase wasimplemented by council.Mayor Larry Sommerfeldsaid they increased thebase tax portion instead ofthe mill rate, which meansresidents will be payingabout $100 more this year.Mayor Ken Hartz fromBradwell said the communitywill also be increasingtaxes, although itwill be very little. “We wantto keep it down as much aspossible.”In Clavet, the budgethad not been finalized yet,but it was expected to bedone shortly.Colonsay’s taxes stemmingfrom its budget forthis year will see no changeas the community electedto remain the same.Residents in Drake willsee an increase in propertytaxes. The mill rate wasset at 14 mills, an increasefrom 10.5 mills. Mayor EricUpshall said the move wasmade to cover necessaryexpenditures. “We want todo what was right for thevillage,” and ensure thatcritical areas were covered.10055MF02Upshall is also hoping tobuild a small reserve fund tohelp cover any expendituresurprises. Infrastructurewas one issue they want toaddress and are looking todo some upgrading.Viscount made a moveto raise their mill rate byone and a half mills.There is also an increasein Watrous. The base tax,which covers essential serviceslike the fire departmentand the police station,saw a $25 increase. Overall,the mill rate went up fromnine to 10. Mayor Ed Collinssaid on average residentswill see an increaseof about 4.5 per cent.The increase was implementedto cover streetwork, the long-term care facilitythat will be replacingthe existing ManitouLodge, and other inflationaryitems.
