While virtuallyall councils have settheir mill rates, some arefinalizing their annualbudgets in an effort to keepup with the expandingeconomy and to meet thedemands of incoming residents.Fourteen communitieswere contacted about thisyear’s taxes and in Allan,a moderate increase wasimplemented by council.<strong>May</strong>or Larry Sommerfeldsaid they increased thebase tax portion instead ofthe mill rate, which meansresidents will be payingabout $100 more this year.<strong>May</strong>or Ken Hartz fromBradwell said the communitywill also be increasingtaxes, although itwill be very little. “We wantto keep it down as much aspossible.”In Clavet, the budgethad not been finalized yet,but it was expected to bedone shortly.Colonsay’s taxes stemmingfrom its budget forthis year will see no changeas the community electedto remain the same.Residents in Drake willsee an increase in propertytaxes. Overall,the mill rate went up fromnine to 10. <strong>May</strong>or Ed Collinssaid on average residentswill see an increaseof about 4.5 per cent.The increase was implementedto cover streetwork, the long-term care facilitythat will be replacingthe existing ManitouLodge, and other inflationaryitems.
