6 • MONDAY, MAY 31, 2010 THE WATROUS MANITOUSports and RecreationTHE POINTTalk about a complete180. Athletes taking part inpre-district track and fieldin Watrous were treatedto serious sunshine. Thatdid not last as competitorswho advanced to districtsin Saskatoon May 25 hadto face the rain and mud. However, hats off to thosewho participated in thisyear’s event and were ableto move on.To hockey and the stagewas set for this year’sStanley Cup finals: theChicago Blackhawks andthe Philadelphia Flyers. If you polled 10 people intohockey before the playoffs started, you would probablyget a few who would say Chicago had a shot at makingit to the finals. As for the Flyers, I am going to guessthat no one, except for Philly fans, would have predictedthem to make it.I like both teams. They have speed, skill, youth, goodcoaching and two goaltenders who are playing wayabove their heads. One matchup that I am intrigued at is Flyers defencemanChris Pronger and ‘Hawks forward Dustin Byfuglien.‘Big Buff ’ as play-by-play man Jim Hughson calledhim is just that, 6’4” and 257 lbs. The forward enteredthe finals with eight goals, four of those game winners. That is more game winners then he had during theregular season and just under half as many goals as hescored in the 82-game year. The player who parks himselfin front of netminders will have to contend withanother giant in Pronger. The physical blueliner is 6”6’ and 220 lbs. ‘Prongs’has four tallies in the playoffs to go along with 18 penaltyminutes in 17 games. The Flyers who finished seventh in the East - andmade it to the playoffs after a shootout win against theNew York Rangers - take on the second-best team in theWest. The last time these two teams won the Cup wasdecades ago - Chicago in 1961 and the Flyers in 1974 and‘75.Regardless of who wins, one city and its fans willbe very happy to see the Cup, something that has longeluded both franchises.I am picking Chicago to take it in six games, albeitthe games will be tight all the way through. The countdown is nearing an end for CFL fans waitinganxiously for football to start as training campsget underway this week. It seems like a long time sincethe Grey Cup ended for ‘Rider fans and I am sure evenlonger for players who want to hit the gridiron and tryto erase last year’s final game. The green and white signed a pair of quarterbackslast Wednesday to make five heading into camp. DarianDurant, Cole Bergquist, Kent Smith and the two ‘newguys’ Todd Reesing and Ryan Dinwiddie will be chuckingthe pigskin at camp. For Kerry Joseph fans like myself, this means thatKJ is not coming to camp. I can understand it, but asa fan of a player you want to see him suit up for yourteam.I am liking the fact that they signed Reesing moreand more. Reading about his play, it appears that theformer Kansas University player could fit right into theCFL style. Reesing led his team to a 2008 FedEx OrangeBowl victory over Virginia. As for Dinwiddie, he is the only other quarterbackbesides Durant on the roster who has any type of CFLexperience. I think he becomes the guy to fill in thenumber two spot behind Durant, while Bergquist andReesing battle it out for third. In the NFL, Super Bowl XLVIII will be played inMeadowlands Stadium, which is used by the New YorkGiants and the New York Jets. One of the criteria tohold a Super Bowl is to have temperatures averaging atleast 10˚C in early February. Apparently it only averages4˚C there in the second month of the year. The leagueallowed the one-time waiver, knocking Tampa out of therunning for the event.Teams getting to the final will play in the $1.6 billionstadium. I think for this Super Bowl, Philadelphianeeds to do everything to get there because its playerswill be used to outdoor elements and could have anupper-hand against a team who is used to a warmerclimate or a dome. However, the Eagles making it to the Super Bowl isanother story for another day!To the NBA for a quick second and I have to admitI am becoming more and more of a fan of Steve Nash. The Canuck who plays for Phoenix has been pulling outall the stops, including fighting off getting smacked inAFTERSee page 7: THE POINT AFTERSoggysettingfordistrictmeetBy Daniel BushmanTWMDespite rain, mud andwinds, athletes from acrossHorizon School Divisionheaded to Saskatoon totake part in districts May25.Listed below are athletesfrom the readershiparea who placed in eachcategory; athletes who finishedfirst and second willcompete in provincials inMoose Jaw June 4 and 5.Senior girls400 m: Fifth - LinayaSchroeder, Holdfast,1:13:59.80 m hurdles: Fifth -Kaylyn Hagel, Watrous,16.23; Eighth - Tracy Sundquist,Watrous, 17.62.High jump: Fifth -Jesse Dieno, Young, 1.30m.Long jump: Ninth -Kelsey Dale, Viscount, 3.69m; Tenth - Kaylyn Hagel,Watrous, 3.66 m.Triple jump: Sixth -Kelsey Dale, Viscount, 8.04m.Shot put: Fifth - KelseyTeneycke, Watrous, 8.62 m.Discus: Fifth - AveryChypiska, Holdfast, 22.21m.Javelin: First - KelseyTeneycke, Watrous, 29.37m.Junior girls100 m: Fifth - LaceyStewart, Watrous, 14.74.80 m hurdles: Sixth -Lacey Stewart, Watrous,16.39; Eighth - Codie Van-Damme, Imperial, 18.08.High jump: Seventh -Tyneal Welter, Viscount,1.25 m.Long jump: Second -Lacey Stewart, Watrous,4.22 m.Triple jump: Tenth -Lacey Stewart, Watrous,7.80 m.Discus: Ninth -Shayvonne Allin, Watrous,18.29 m.Javelin: Fourth - AlanaFahlman, Holdfast, 21.43m.Midget girlsTriple jump: Tenth -Taylor Tkachuk, Watrous,7.42 m.Javelin: Third - AshleyWillms, Watrous, 21.03 m.400 m: Sixth - AmandaFahlman, Holdfast, 1:23:60;Eighth - Jessica Curts,Holdfast, 1:25:33.Discus: Eleventh -Daphne Detwiller, Imperial,15.77 m.Bantam girls100 m quad: Second- Reanne Berry, Young,17.10.Take your best shotDrake’s Marissa Weiss competed at predistrictsin Watrous and then headed toSaskatoon May 25 with athletes from theHorizon School Division to take part in400 m: Tenth - PaigeBall, Holdfast, 1:35:36.800 m quad: Second- Reanne Berry, Young,3:21:7680 m hurdles: Tenth -Paige Ball, Holdfast, 18.33.Long jump quad:Third - Reanne Berry,Young, 3.17 m.Triple jump: Sixth- Brooke Thauberger,Holdfast, 7.24 m.Shot put: Third - LisaToews, Watrous, 7.23 m;Ninth - Desiree Luzny,Holdfast, 6.45 m.Pee Wee girls400 m: Third - HayliRiach, Watrous, 1:29:15.80 m hurdles: Sixth- Alexa Westby, Watrous,18.02.High jump: Fifth -Alexa Westby, Watrous,1.20 m; Sixth - Halle Stewart,Watrous, 1.15 m.Long Jump: Seventh- Marissa Weiss, Drake,3.57 m.Triple Jump: Third -Marissa Weiss, Drake, 7.78m; Sixth - Lexi Neufeld,Drake, 7.15 m; Tenth - KylaFidelack, Watrous, 6.58 m.Shot put: Eighth -Morgan Amendt, Watrous,5.90 m.Discus: Second - MorganAmendt, Watrous,17.22 m; Fourth - OliviaArstall-Mooney, Imperial,14.40 m; Seventh - LexiNeufeld, Drake, 12.12 m.Javelin: Second - JensenLewis, Watrous, 18.55m; Fourth - Olivia Arstall-Mooney, Imperial, 15.48 m.Senior boys100 m: First - Ian Mc-Lellan, Holdfast, 11.91.200 m: First - Ian Mc-Lellan, Holdfast, 24.57.400 m: First - Ian Mc-Lellan, Holdfast, 56.88.800 m: Sixth - LandonFahlman, Holdfast, 2:34:75.1500 m: Eighth - LandonFahlman, Holdfast,6:03:47.100 m hurdles: First- Ian McLellan, Holdfast,14.78; Seventh - LandonFahlman, Holdfast, 20.17.High jump: Seventh- Josh Amendt, Watrous,1.50 m.Shot put: Seventh- Taylor McGregor,Watrous, 10.66 m.Discus: Seventh - CodyGieselman, Young, 28.60districts.
