Middle Schooling Mrs T Kotzas & Mr M Stewart Year 8 students are thinking ahead to next year and we look forward to discussing their academic options for Years 9 and 10 at the Subject Selection evening next Thursday in the Campbell Centre commencing at 7pm. Students are not required to wear their uniform. We will distribute the booklets next Wednesday and Thursday and any students who are unable to attend the evening should ensure that they have received a booklet and see Mrs Therese Kotzas if they have any questions. Year 6 students spent Tuesday at the Nudgee Beach Environmental Education Centre as part of their Geography unit Coastlines. All the very best to our Middle School students who will be participating in the Catholic College’s Music Festival this weekend. Exceptional Learners Mrs J Dignam Homework - Parents often ask us: What do I do when he says that he does not have any homework? The answer is…there is no such thing as no homework! Set homework + assignments + revision = homework. Encourage your son to follow this self-questioning strategy to help him manage his workload. If he follows the flow chart below, he will always have homework. Homework is an essential part of the learning process. It provides students with the opportunity to practise, reinforce or apply newly-acquired skills and knowledge and to learn the skills of independent study. It also fosters initiative, responsibility and self-discipline. Parents can support their sons by ensuring there is a work space available which is quiet and equipped; setting aside time every day for doing homework; providing guidance and support but not answers; assisting with setting priorities; and praising and rewarding effort and persistence. Director of Culture Mr N Wharton Last Saturday evening our Debating community gathered for their annual dinner and Great Debate. It was a very rewarding night and the entertainment provided by the Senior A v Parent debate was well received by the audience. I would like to thank Mr Greg Quinn, Dr Dominique Carroll, and Judge Michael Rackemann for the outstanding display from the parent team who apparently lost by the smallest of margins. My thanks also to our Debating chair Dr John Bashford, timekeeper Mr David Toohey, Mrs Deborah Sinnott, Mr Chris Tyquin and the many parents who played a major role in organising this event. I am sure the boys enjoyed the opportunity to gather with their friends. This week, debates are on Friday evening due to the Exhibition holiday. We wish all our boys the best of luck for the quarter-finals. Our Chess teams continue to quietly achieve wins and I thank Madame Thaïs Morgan-Pertus for her leadership of this program. The Catholic Colleges' Music Festival starts on Friday and continues until Sunday. This is an enormous festival. We have many groups entered and I wish our boys the best of luck in their quests for gold medals. GPS Rugby photographs - We will be taking the GPS Rugby photographs this weekend at Tennyson. This will be a full day and we would like parent assistance in ensuring the session runs as smoothly as possible. Please check the schedule so that you and your son know when his photograph will be taken. It is imperative that you allow yourself plenty of time as there will be restricted parking at Tennyson on Saturday. We will be taking the photographs at the western end of the Br Charlie Dillon Boatshed on the concrete area. Please do not go upstairs to the deck as there will be another function using that space. All players and coaches should arrive in uniform in plenty of time for their photograph. Gallipoli 2013 - Our first meeting with potential choir members was held last week. We have offered 28 students a position in this choir and as you can imagine everyone is excited about this opportunity. The students are required to pay for their fare to participate in this event. In support of these students, a fundraising committee will be formed to help subsidise each student. I would hope that the All Hallows' and Terrace communities would get behind the fundraising ventures once they are up and running. I am sure the students would appreciate any financial assistance. Music Mr B Bobart Last Wednesday evening was the first Middle School Concert for 2012. This was an opportunity for our younger musicians at Terrace to show their parents and friends what they have achieved in their Music classes. With every student from Years 5 to 7 learning an instrument plus the Concert Band and Callan Strings, there were more than 250 performers on the night. Among the appreciative audience were Mr Norm Clarke and his sister Mary, who have provided many of the instruments for our students to play. All the ensembles performed exceptionally well. The future of Terrace Music sounds very exciting. This weekend is the annual Catholic Colleges' Music Festival. Terrace has 12 ensembles performing over three days with the Percussion Ensemble 2 making their festival debut. A detailed schedule of arrival times and venues has been sent out and is also on the Terrace website. Please note the performance uniform for each ensemble as students not in the correct uniform will not perform. Also this weekend is the Terrace/ Nudgee Rugby match. Our Drumline will be at Tennyson to help with the cheers for the 1sts game. I would like to thank Mrs Stephanie Jackson our wonderful Music Assistant who is leaving Terrace to take up a similar position at All Hallows'. Stephanie has been a great help to the Music staff at Terrace and we wish her well in her change of schools. Chess Ms T Morgan-Pertus Round 4 was played on Friday at Brisbane Boys College and below are the results of that evening. BBC GT Premier 3 1 Senior 1 3 Junior 2 2 Open A 3 1 Open B 1 .5 2.5 The following students should be congratulated for their performance in the competition: Premier Nameer Van Oosterom; Senior Duy-Khang Pham, Yanni Michellis, Fergus Mactaggart; Junior Sam Kelly, Michael Pie; Open A Nick Trezise; Open B Tom Land, Nick Morris, Patrick Morris (drew). Round 5, on Friday 17 August, will take place at Gregory Terrace in Room 5.8 and 5.7. We play Nudgee College. As we will play at GT, all seven teams are expected to be present. The games should start at 4.30pm and finish at around 6.30pm. The season draw is on the Chess page of the website. QDU Debating Mrs L O’Sullivan Last Saturday night was the very successful annual Debating Dinner at Waterford Place. The comedy debate: That our children are leaving home too late, between the Senior A and Mr Greg Quinn, Dr Dominique Carroll and the Judge Michael Rackemann was very funny. The quarter-finals of the QDU competition will be held tomorrow on Friday 17 August. Senior A is in GT125 at 7pm against BGGS, and will be arguing the affirmative: That countries that are in severe economic crisis should suspend democratic elections and appoint economic experts as rulers. Both Year 11 teams are debating the affirmative case at Terrace, at 7pm: That Australia should provide a guarantee of military intervention to protect democratically elected governments in the Pacific. 9.2 is arguing the negative case, at BGGS at 8.15pm against Somerville 9.3: That all political parties should have a mandatory affirmative action quota for women. The semi-finals will be held at BGGS and Terrace next Wednesday, with all teams having a secret topic debate. Please support all of our teams that have reached the quarters by watching them at BGGS or Terrace tomorrow night.
