obh.mailFriday 2nd November: Issue No. 71Ghosts & Ghouls on Halloween NightNotes from the Head’s study…A very warm welcome back to the second half of the Michaelmas term. These six weeks will fly byand we have much planned. Please keep your eyes on the obh.mail each week to ensure that you don’tmiss anything. The boarders enjoyed an exciting All Hallows’ Evening on Wednesday complete with carved pumpkins, toffee apples, macabre costumes and party games. It is interesting and in many ways heartening tosee children getting as much if not more fun out of dressing up, painting their faces and playinggames as they do sitting in front of a television or computer screen. Playing is becoming a lost artthese days and yet it is a vital component in growing up to be happy and confident. The moreopportunities children have to experience exciting interaction with others, the better. Perhaps weshould organise an activity which teaches children how to play?We look forward to the popular annual fireworks display tomorrow evening, here in Brettenham Park.Do come along if you can – all are most welcome. There will be a Service of Holy Communion at Thorpe Morieux Church on Sunday at 10.00am. Again, allare welcome.Quote of the weekLife can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.Søren Kierkegaard.Yours aye,John BrettOld Buckenham HallBrettenham, Suffolk, IP7 7PH | tel: 01449 740252 | email: office@obh.co.ukheadmaster@obh.co.ukwww.obh.co.uk

obh.mailNews from the Pre-Prep and NurseryThis week in Nursery we have beentalking about fireworks and bonfirenight, and at the beginning of theweek we made amazing and explosivefirework pictures. Then in ourcooking lesson we made Catherinewheel biscuits, which were delicious. Then on Wednesday we enjoyedcarving our pumpkins into shapes andthen we had lots of fun gettingmessy playing with them. When we were playing with ourpumpkins we came up with great words to describe howit felt. These included; prickly, sticky, squidgy and slippery. Then with the shapes which we carved out of ourpumpkin we used them to print with in black and orangepaint. What an exciting first week back,Reception have gottheir very ownreading books andhave thoroughlyenjoyed using thepictures in them to make up some oftheir own stories. Mr Brett and CleverTed were very impressed with ourstorytelling skills. We have been on ‘Autumn watch’looking at how the leaves on the treeshave changed colour and collectingsome which have fallen to the ground.Using the leaves and some colourswhich remind us of the autumn time,we made some beautiful autumnprinting pictures. It all got a littlegooey on Wednesday as we have beenbusy carving our pumpkins, and wedecided that we didn’t want to carve ascary face into our pumpkin but to usestar cutters to create a sky and paintedon a silhouette of a tree.NoticesPre-Prep parent meetingsTuesday 13th November &Wednesday 14th November3.50 - 5.20 pm.Please sign up for an appointment outsideyour child's classroom.Nursery parents please sign up for anappointment with Mrs Steward (sign upsheet located outside the Reception classroom). To help with child care you are more thanwelcome to use the after school carefacility and on this occasion it will be freeof charge. obh.mailYear 7 Study Skills SessionWith school exams now less than a fortnight away,Year 7 looked at Study Skills this week with anextended lesson covering different learningstyles, exam technique and effective revisionstrategies. The session began with an instruction and aquestion: ‘Turn over the paper in front of you andlearn the words… any way that you like’. A minuteand a half later, several pupils were struggling –the words were one to ten in Japanese, a languageunfamiliar to everyone. In spite of this, there were some interestingideas: ‘sit in silence reading with your fingers inyour ears to block out everything’, ‘tap out thewords’, ‘chant it over and over again’ were amongstsuggestions made until we learnt the numbers byusing a combination of actions and associations:1 – ichi – itchy (with the mime of scratching)2 – nee – knee (scratching our knees)3 – san – sun (the itch has gone, so look at the sun)et cetera. This way of learning worked as it followed triedand-testedsystems for acquiring new information:attach the unknown to what you know or recognisealready and personalise new material by making itquirky and unusual.More importantly, the exercise demonstrated avariety of ways in which learning can be achievedwhich several pupils had not considered before. The session then went on to examine ‘effectiveand ‘ineffective revision strategies’ before therewas an informative quiz to help pupils assess theirdominant learning style – Visual, Auditory orKinaesthetic. The three types of learners separated into groupsand produced A3 posters to demonstrateappropriate methods of learning – regardless ofthe subject being studied. We then coveredessential exam technique and top tips forperforming well in a test situation. The ‘learn to learn’ workshop ended with asummary and the completion of an anonymousevaluation form. Here were some of the commentsmade:What have you learnt about Study Skills thissession?- ‘What types of revision I need for my style oflearning’‘I have learnt that I am a kinaesthetic learner’‘Today I’ve learnt lots of revision tips and what todo and what not to do’- ‘I have learnt more options to learn for exams’Will you do anything differently as a result ofthis morning? If so, what?-‘I will try and focus my learning on the way Ilearn best’‘Put a lot more effort into revision’‘I’ll be a lot more organised’‘Yes, I’ll do associations – like ‘ju’ (ten)’What was the best part of the session?- Learning Japanese- Working in a group- The best part was speaking Japanese- Learning the numbers 1-10TOld Buckenham HallBrettenham, Suffolk, IP7 7PH | tel: 01449 740252 | email: office@obh.co.ukwww.obh.co.uk
