obh.mailFriday 21st September: Issue No. 67Scuba DivingNotes from the Head’s study…This week has been a Not in Our School week. Following an assembly on Monday morning where wetalked about ways in which we could ensure that OBH is a happy and safe school, where we show kindnessand tolerance in all that we do and where we say NO to bullying of any kind, pupils have beenthinking of all the things that they would like to get rid of at school – broccoli and exams don’t count!During the week pupils have been writing these things down and putting them in the black bin that youmight have seen sitting outside my study. Earlier today in assembly we emptied the bin and read outexamples of some of the things that pupils have said they don’t want at OBH. Enlightening and I hopecathartic. The UK Government’s plans to reform the current GCSE exam bear more than a passing resemblancestructurally to our own OBH Curriculum (the OBH©), which forms the framework for preparation for13+ scholarship and Common Entrance exams at OBH. Our pupils would be well placed to take thesenew exams, having already had the experience of the demands of C.E. and scholarship work. It is goodto see that a more systematic, robust approach is being taken to the national system of exams.Whether or not the theory becomes practice, we shall have to see.Well done to all our pupils. You have shown great character and determination this week. Enjoy theExeat weekend.Quote of the weekStrive to be the very best version of yourself that you can possibly be.Dr Anthony SeldonYours aye,John Brettheadmaster@obh.co.ukOld Buckenham HallBrettenham, Suffolk, IP7 7PH | tel: 01449 740252 | email: office@obh.co.ukwww.obh.co.uk

obh.mailBoarding Matters ………The children made the most ofbeing outside this weekend andwe kicked off with the muchanticipated ‘manhunt’. I will try toexplain the rules as simply as Ican! The children are split into teams and using a map andlightsticks have to navigate themselves and their teamaround the school grounds. They are being chased byour ‘Hunter force’ which try to capture the teamsbetween the orienteering points. Once captured theyhand over their ‘capture’ cards and points are takenaway from them. Needless to say the team with themost capture cards left overand most orienteering pointsvisited wins! It was great funand all the children managed toget round the course. After anhour or so of fierce competitionthe children returned back tobase for hot chocolate and biscuits before collapsinginto bed for a well-deserved sleep.Sunday morning was a long lie in and pyjama breakfastready for a very busy day of activities. We had anextreme scavenger hunt in the morning where they hadto solve clues and riddles to find items; we definitelyhave some future treasure hunters amongst us! After ahearty roast Dr Marshall hosted the ‘Jacot’ cupfootball tournament which we run every year with thetrophy kindly donated by Mrs Jacot a former parent.Well done to all who took part in a very fair contestindeed. Whilst this was taking place the children had achance to test our Go Karts out for the first time thisyear! (after Mr Drake had a go first obviously!) In factthe only thing that got Mr Drake out of the Go Kartswas the smell of freshly cooked fairy cakes that hadbeen made by some of the girls in the kitchen! A finedisplay of assorted cakes and all so yummy! After supper the children settled down to a mixtureof activities ranging from golf, touch rugby,, dvd’s,music and dodgeball. Needless to say Sunday night up inthe dorms was relatively quiet!Nick Drake29th & 30th SeptemberBoarders’ Trips to Grease The Musicaland Aldeburgh Food and Drink FestivalThere are two great trips on the agenda for ourBoarders next weekendOn Saturday we will be travelling to IpswichRegent for a performance of Grease (featuringMary Byrne from XFactor – does anyoneremember her!? obh.mailFeltmaking WorkshopFeltmakingPupils choosing Art for their Thursday afternoonactivity alongside our Art Scholarship candidates had abrilliant opportunity to sample a felt-making masterclasswith Emily O’Hare of “Felt Fabulous” on Monday. We were introduced to the different variety of breedsof sheep and the types of wool that they produced suchas “Jacob” and “Badger”. After looking at Emily’ssketchbooks and some of her beautiful felted wares:hats, scarves, pumpkin pin-cushions and wall hangings, itwas now our turn to have a go at creating a simple feltedsheet. We chose the theme of Remembrance and the pupils setabout layering the felt, then different shades of woolwere added to create a suitable theme including poppies. The layers were then “felted” together by adding soap, water and plenty of elbow-grease. The Scholars chose amore sombre theme in their work, and Emily gave themspecial wools to include in their pieces, creatingsubtle sepia tones. After further experimentation, thechildren divided into groups and created larger worksbased on Gustav Klimt’s patterns and some of thechildren even had the opportunity to develop theirpattern-making skills into individual pieces.A fantastic day was had by all and Emily was brilliantwith all the children. If you head to Blackthorpe Barnsthis Christmas- be sure to look out for Emily on her“Felt Fabulous” stall!Headingham Castle Year 7 TripTuesday 25 thSeptemberDepart OBH 9.15amReturn OBH 3.00 pmYear 7 will be visiting Hedingham Castle onTuesday 25 th September as part of their Historystudies. obh.mailYear 5 Art Trip to Sainsbury CentreTo Sainsbury’s… for bread andmilk?Bright and early on Friday morning, Year 5 embarkedon a trip to the Sainsbury’s Centre at the Universityof East Anglia, Norwich. After some discussion atbreakfast with Ned and Alick, we quickly cleared upany confusion about the day ahead of us. We werenot going on an extended day trip to the supermarket to stock up on bread and milk for the chef, butactually to look at a very fine collection of African Masks and Art once owned by Mr and MrsSainsbury. Mr B and our driver Phil whisked Year 5, Miss King and myself cross-country toNorwich by mini-bus taking a very scenic route. Ten minutes into the journey…“Are we nearly there yet?” inquired Caspar.“Not quite yet”A little later…“Are we nearly there yet?” inquired Caspar.“Keep your eyes peeled for a big glass cube” I suggested.Much later…“Wow! Look at that cube! It’s amazing!”Following a small rain shower we dashed into the building where we were met by our lovely guides, whowhisked us off on an in-depth tour of all of the marvellous African artefacts. There were Fangmasks, spears and statues of witch doctors, brass masks, wooden masks, coloured masks, andpatterned masks and we even got to see some bonus features: Degas’ “Little Dancer” and also a“proper” Giacometti sculpture. It was all rather exhausting! After a short period of time sketching,Georgie and Georgie inquired about our dining arrangements for the day. Auriel and Imogen agreedthat it would be a most opportune moment to partake of our packed lunches. And so… it came to passthat we all huddled into the school room with our sandwiches and jammy doughnuts. As soon as wehad finished, Becca, the Education Officer arrived, announcing that it was probably a Very GoodTime to make our masks, now that we had had a smackerel of something delicious. We met ourwonderful hostess for the afternoon, Doo Spalding, who quickly showed us how to create a papermask, complete with a highly effective ‘cheat technique’ to make the chin using a hole punch and theobligatory item in any teacher’s toolkit: a split-pin.“Gosh, that is clever” exclaimed Emma with a huge smile, fastening her chin. So, mask-shapes at the ready, Caspar and Arthur set about creating “feathers” whilst Mr B helpedHugo to create some very convincing facial features. Miss King (a dab hand at scissor-snipping) wasat the ready to help Anthony and Scarlett with their designs. A little later Becca emerged and wewere given the opportunity to handle some real African Masks! Following a quick photo-call, we saidour goodbyes and headed back to the mini-bus. Year 5 did an amazing job at creating some really wildand wonderful masks; they were great company and they had a splendid time.Special thanks to our drivers and to Miss King for all of their help and support and scissor-skills andexpert driving and patience on our trip!Old Buckenham HallBrettenham, Suffolk, IP7 7PH | tel: 01449 740252 | email: office@obh.co.ukwww.obh.co.uk

We have beenplaying the ‘spotty dogs’ and ‘ladybird’ games usinga giant die to help to usremember our numbers. In music we have delightedMr. Dunham with our singing,as we have learned all thewords for our beautifulharvest festival songs andhave been singing them with such enthusiasm. Finally we have got all creative bymaking houses for our three littlepigs; we used straw, sticks andbricks for the little pigs to live in.In cooking we have been baking anddecorating our very own pig shapedbiscuits and munched them up forour snack - yum yum!Bubble Wrap JellyfishThis week in Pre-Prep Craft Club we weredelighted to welcome a new member to thegroup as we carried on with the theme ofunusual animals. The session began with circle time and thequestion: ‘What colour are jellyfish?’ Severalpupils answered that they were pink althoughsome Year 2s thought that they were ‘seethrough’and taught the younger children theword ‘transparent’. We then looked at severalimages of jellyfish and discovered that bothanswers were right! To make the jellyfish,we each produced ablue bubble wrap printfor the body and cutup lots of strips ofdifferent materials(organza, bubble wrap, printed paper andtissue paper) for the‘trailing bits’ whichLottie Englishcorrectly identified as‘tentacles.’At the end of the afternoon everyone was verypleased with their jellyfish, particularly asunlike the real thing, they won’t be able tosting.Old Buckenham HallBrettenham, Suffolk, IP7 7PH | tel: 01449 740252 | email: office@obh.co.ukwww.obh.co.uk
