obh.mailFriday 16th November: Issue No. 72Year 4 at Colchester CastleNotes from the Head’s study…In our drive to ensure that we have effective mechanisms for communicating and consulting withparents as well as providing you with high quality and frequent information about your child’s progressat school, we are going to split the traditional ‘parents’ evenings’ into:Parent-Teacher Meetings – an opportunity to meet all the teachers who teach your child, includingsports and the arts subjects, for a general progress report.AndExam/Assessment Feedback Meetings – an opportunity to talk with your child’s Form Tutor/ClassTeacher and/or relevant subject teachers about recent exams or assessments. The parents’ meetings next week for Years 6 to 8 will take the form of Exam/Assessment FeedbackMeetings, details of which you will have received from your child’s Form Tutor.Additionally, through your child’s Form Tutor or Class Teacher, you may make an appointment at atime that suits you to meet with any of your child’s teachers.I believe it to be a vital element of the partnership between school and home that parents are givenclear information on key aspects of teaching and learning all the way through a child’s progress atschool. As ever, I would welcome any feedback on how you think we are doing in this important area ofour work at OBH.Enjoy the Exeat weekend.Quote of the weekThe task of the modern educator is not to cut down jungles, but to irrigate deserts.C.S. obh.mailYear 4 trip to Colchester CastleThe children in Year 4 accompanied by Mrs Warren, MissJary and Mr Bruce set off in an excited frame of mind toColchester Castle. After a peaceful journey where Mr Brucecaught a quick forty winks, we arrived and were greeted byour friendly guide. We climbed down 21 steps that took usback 2100 years to the time of the Romans. We were nowstanding inside the vaults of the Roman temple dedicated toEmperor Claudius and built by native Celtic slaves. It wasexplained to us, with the help of Ash Rigby as a willingvolunteer, that slaves who decided that the construction ofthe temple was a bit too much like hard work would havetheir arms and legs amputated and their head stuck on aspike to warn other slaves not to slack off. We then sawevidence of Boudicca’s rebellion on a small piece ofblackened roof tile which proved she had burntCamulodunum to the ground. We then returned to the modernday to have a quick snack before exploring theinteresting Roman and Celtic artefacts on display in themuseum. Among the other exhibits we found, the childrenidentified a Roman hypocaust and copied patterns frommosaics.Lunch was shared with the pigeons and before we departed, there was a final opportunity to finish our research on theRomans. This was an interesting day for the children andMrs Warren and Miss Jary were very proud of the way thatthe children conducted themselves. Thank you to Mr Brucefor his help with the children and to Phil for driving thesecond mini bus.An account of our trip to Colchester Castleby William MarriageWe left school at 9 o’clock in the minibus that Mrs Warrendrove. When we arrived we went underground in tunnelsbeneath an old temple that was destroyed by Boudicca. Thetunnel was called a vault and the steps represented ahundred years. Back upstairs, we went to look around. Welooked at a Celtic mud hut and we did really fun activities. My two highlights of the trip were looking at Boudicca’schariot and dressing up as a Celt.Old Buckenham HallBrettenham, Suffolk, IP7 7PH | tel: 01449 740252 | email: office@obh.co.ukwww.obh.co.uk
