ENGG*3490Mechatronic Systems DesignPLC Control Systems ProjectTA: Aws Abu-KhudhairAws Abu-Khudhair ENGG*3490 1

Project Goals Consider the workings of an industrylevel control system. Weight the pros and cons of thesystem components. Determine whether an automatedcontrol system is beneficial and why. Develop a functional PLC program tocontrol your chosen system.Aws Abu-Khudhair ENGG*3490 2

Project Requirements Search the internet for an industrial systemthat would benefit from/requires anautomated control system. Identify the requirements of the controlsystem and it’s benefit. Develop and submit a project proposalidentifying the industry application, theproposed control system, it’s benefit, whyis it required, the actual requiredequipments (sensors, actuators, etc.), andyour proposed approach to solve thecontrol problem.Aws Abu-Khudhair ENGG*3490 3

Project Requirements cont.Develop a PLC program that could be used toimplement the needed control measures to ensureboth functionality and stability.Submit a final report documenting• Your chosen system• A list of the actual components required• A list of components used in the design forinput/output to your control system• Your developed system and it’s advantage overexisting designs.• Any modifications made to the original designproposed in the initial proposal report and why theywere made.• Your developed PLC programAws Abu-Khudhair ENGG*3490 4

Control System ExamplesYour chosen system should be realistic andcomplicated enough that it would benefit fromautomated control. Some examples are:• The heating/cooling system of a multi-fluid mixingvessel.• A push-button based manual transmission system.• An automated car park barrier.• An automated control for the level of liquid in amixing vessel.• Further examples may be found on the coursewebsite.Your chosen system MUST be approved by the TAand the Lab Technician before you proceed.Aws Abu-Khudhair ENGG*3490 5

Software/Hardware In order to develop your control system onthe PLC, there are several tools you willneed to use:• The “RSLogix5000 Enterprise Series”software.• The “RSLinx” software.• The PLC station for testing the implementation• A list of various available sensors, motors, andactuators will be provided to you (equipmentwill be assigned on a first come first servebases)Aws Abu-Khudhair ENGG*3490 7

Proposal Requirements Your report should consist of thefollowing sections:• Introduction• Background• Proposed System Implementation• Conclusion• References• AppendixAws Abu-Khudhair ENGG*3490 8

Proposal Requirements:Introduction An in-depth introduction of the industrialsystem that requires an automated controlsystem. A reason should be provided as to why acontrol system would be suitable for thechosen application as opposed to manualcontrol. Diagrams should be used when necessaryto explain the need for the control system.Aws Abu-Khudhair ENGG*3490 9

Proposal Requirements:Background In your background section, you haveto outline the actual physical make-upof the system (i.e. what componentsare used, how do they function, etc..).The provided description shouldpossess a reasonable amount of detail. A list of criteria and constrains for theautomated control system should beoutlined.Aws Abu-Khudhair ENGG*3490 10

Proposal Requirements:Background At the very least, your backgroundsection should include a blockdiagram of your chosen systemshowing its behavior and relevantcontrol signals and outputs. Other relevant figures would bediagrams of the physicalrepresentation of your system.Aws Abu-Khudhair ENGG*3490 11

Proposal Requirements:Proposed System Implementation This section of the report discusses yourproposed control system for your chosenprocess. This section should outline everycomponent needed by your control system, such as:• Sensors• Switches• Solenoids• Valves• Motors• ActuatorsAws Abu-Khudhair ENGG*3490 12

Proposal Requirements:Proposed System Implementation A list of required equipment should be outlined. If a required part is not available in the partslist provided, a description should be given asto how you will implement the system withoutit.• Note that each of your chosen componentsMUST be an actual existing model. The reasoning behind each componentselection should be discussed in regards to thecriteria/constraints and suitability.Aws Abu-Khudhair ENGG*3490 13

Proposal Requirements:Proposed System Implementation The functionality of each componentshould also be discussed at theindividual and system level. In otherwords:• How does it work? What does it do inyour system? And why is it required?• If the component is not available whatwill it be replaced with? And how willthat effect your control system. Implementation/project timeline.Aws Abu-Khudhair ENGG*3490 14
