In farm<strong>in</strong>g communities, membership <strong>in</strong> community associations <strong>of</strong>fers tremendousopportunities to boost agricultural production by provid<strong>in</strong>g various forms <strong>of</strong> support t<strong>of</strong>armers. The respondents po<strong>in</strong>ted out that they belong to diverse community associations.Some respondents belong to only one association while others belong to more than oneassociation.Overall, a large number <strong>of</strong> respondents belong to religious groups, women’s groups andcommunity development groups (Table 2.6). Membership <strong>in</strong>to community developmentgroups <strong>in</strong> <strong>Western</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>ce might be a response to the weakness <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficial extensionservices. Also <strong>in</strong> districts where most <strong>of</strong> the social <strong>in</strong>dicators were poor, memberships <strong>in</strong>religious groups were found to be very high such as <strong>in</strong> Kisumu district (99% <strong>of</strong> households)and Siaya district (85%).Table 2.6.
