The productivity <strong>of</strong> the different cropsis shown <strong>in</strong> Table 3.5 for the short ra<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> 2004 and the long ra<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> 2005.In general, the productivity <strong>of</strong> all crops was higher <strong>in</strong> <strong>Western</strong> compared to Nyanza, and <strong>in</strong>the long ra<strong>in</strong>s season compared to the short ra<strong>in</strong>s season. Hybrid maize yielded higher returnsto land compared to local maize. Fitt<strong>in</strong>g maize <strong>in</strong> the farmers’ scale <strong>of</strong> <strong>Striga</strong> <strong>in</strong>festation onmaize, the calculated average maize yields would correspond to a moderate level <strong>of</strong> <strong>Striga</strong><strong>in</strong>festation. Unexpected are the very low yields for cassava <strong>of</strong> less than 3 tons/ha while thiscrop could yield up to 10tons/ha <strong>in</strong> the study region. The reasons could be <strong>in</strong> the high<strong>in</strong>cidence <strong>of</strong> pest and diseases <strong>in</strong> the sampled villages and low stands <strong>of</strong> cassava <strong>in</strong> the<strong>in</strong>tercropp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> maize/cassava. The other reason could be that cassava is not harvested atonce as it is <strong>of</strong>ten done for cereals and gra<strong>in</strong> legumes.24
