Mama Fairtrade visits <strong>York</strong>Patricia Mutangili’s neighbourscall her Mama Fairtrade becauseshe spreads the messageeverywhere she goes. And she’scoming <strong>to</strong> <strong>York</strong>!Patricia is a tea farmer from theslopes <strong>of</strong> Mount Kenya. She sellsher tea <strong>to</strong> Ndima, which suppliestea used in the Traidcraft range.She’ll be visiting St Michael leBelfrey <strong>Church</strong> on Monday 5thSeptember at 3pm, andexplaining why every cup <strong>of</strong> hertea we drink makes a difference.Patricia said, “It is going <strong>to</strong> bringbread <strong>to</strong> the tables <strong>of</strong> theproducers. It is going <strong>to</strong> makethem educate their children. It isgoing <strong>to</strong> make them moreemployment and they are going<strong>to</strong> elevate their standards <strong>of</strong>living.”Local schools and churches withland also sell tea <strong>to</strong> Ndima. AtThunguri Primary School casualworkers pluck the school’s 2,000bushes, with the money raisedpaying for exam papers andhelping with maintenance.Around 350 children attend theschool which doesn’t haveelectricity, so sometimes lessonsare delayed until the morninglight improves. The school alsohas a special needs class – theonly one in the area.The <strong>Diocese</strong> will be lookingfurther at why what we purchasecan make such a difference, aspart <strong>of</strong> the Year <strong>of</strong> theEnvironment. Bearing WitnessOn Saturday 1st Oc<strong>to</strong>ber, the eve <strong>of</strong>the Conservative Party Conference,supporters from around the UK willbe joining Christian Aid, Cafod andTearfund in Manchester for a day <strong>of</strong>learning, campaigning and worshipon the issues <strong>of</strong> climate change andglobal poverty.Speakers from around the world willcome <strong>to</strong>gether <strong>to</strong> discuss globalissues with a focus on the damagingeffects <strong>of</strong> climate change on theworld’s poorest communities. Theywill include former president <strong>of</strong> theSouth African Council <strong>of</strong> Chuches,activist and theologian, Pr<strong>of</strong>. TinyikoMaluleke, who will speak on how theglobal church and Christians canlead action on climate change.After the speakers and a specialecumenical service in the AnglicanCathedral, attendees will form aprocession <strong>to</strong> the conference centre,where the Conservative PartyConference will be taking place, andwill hold a candlelit vigil <strong>to</strong> pray forthe government not <strong>to</strong> forget theworld’s poor during its conference.By taking a stand in Manchester onthis day, organisers and supportershope <strong>to</strong> remind the Conservatives <strong>of</strong>David Cameron’s promise <strong>to</strong> be the‘greenest government ever’. Treasurers’ training daysFeedback from parishes suggests thatthere continues <strong>to</strong> be considerableinterest in support and training bothfor existing <strong>of</strong>fice holders and thosenew in post and a number <strong>of</strong>seminars have been organised.Issues <strong>to</strong> be covered will include:Legal and financial overview <strong>of</strong> aPCC; Principles <strong>of</strong> PCC accounts;Format <strong>of</strong> accounts and the AnnualReport. Please note that much <strong>of</strong> thematerial was also covered on theequivalent courses in 2010.
