Service Learning Volunteer ExperiencesQUICK FACTUC Davis Extension offersmore than 150 coursesevery quarter <strong>and</strong> enrollsnearly 60,000 studentsannually.Students will help improve thecommunity <strong>and</strong> develop leadershipskills in UC Davis Extension’s Centerfor International Education ServiceLearning Volunteer Experiencesprogram. Students combineacademic study with communityservice to enhance learning <strong>and</strong> gainknowledge <strong>and</strong> experience in civicresponsibility. Their volunteeringstrengthens communities <strong>and</strong>provides students an excellentopportunity to advance their Englishlanguage skills by interactingwith <strong>and</strong> serving people in thecommunity.Volunteering also provides valuablework experience to add to résumés<strong>and</strong> strengthen applications foradmission to undergraduate <strong>and</strong>graduate programs.We offer Service LearningVolunteer Experience courses,<strong>and</strong> customized volunteeringprojects.Types of volunteering include:• Tutoring <strong>and</strong> mentoring children• Helping the elderly• Preparing <strong>and</strong> serving meals tothe hungry• Building houses for the homeless• Assisting nonprofit organizations• Providing administrative supportto businesses• Planting trees to improve theenvironment• And moreMajor UC Davis campusvolunteering events include theWhole Earth Festival, CelebrateDavis <strong>and</strong> Open Campus Picnic Day.“I had fun together with the residents of theretirement center. Various activities are heldevery day. I did an activity with origami onthe first day, <strong>and</strong> we made a bird, a box <strong>and</strong> apaper aircraft! Other activities were playingh<strong>and</strong>made instruments, singing, concerts,pumpkin painting, wood painting, playingboard games <strong>and</strong> playing Wii. It is true thatbalancing studying with volunteering washard, but both of them are great ingredients ofmy stay.
