, Regula320 APPENDIX.Cap. vi.SUNDRY RULES FOR PLAYING FROM FIGURED-BASS INFOUR PARTS THROUGHOUT.Regula I.The written bass is to be played with the left hand alone, butit may play the other parts, too, together with the right hand, whetherthey are indicated or not.Regula II.The third may be played with most of the figured notes, when it isnot prevented by a second or a fourth expressly indicated.Regula III.Two fifths or two octaves must not occur next one another, for thisis not only a fault but it sounds wrong. To avoid this there is an oldrule, that the hands must always go against one another, so that whenthe left goes up the right must go down, and when the right goes upthe left must go down.IV.The best way to avoid and get rid of two fifthsthe sixth in and so to effect an alternation.Cap. VII.or octaves is to takeHOW TO PLAY WHEN NO FIGURES ARE WRITTEN ABOVE THE BASS.When nothing stands written above the bass, none but consonances,especially the third, fifth, and eighth are to be played ; for example, inthe case of a bass of this kind :m m ^the consonances would be played in the right hand, as follows :t* =^ =^m=ps=mBut it is not necessary to remain bound down to one kind of treatment,but the lowest part may be made the uppermost part or thetreble.
