<strong>Sullivan</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />
Dr. Coppock has been a college administrator for 42<br />
years, the first 9 years in the liberal arts sector, and the last<br />
33 years in the proprietary sector. He came to <strong>Sullivan</strong> as a<br />
full time employee in 1976 and since that time has been a<br />
Dean, a Location Director, a <strong>Sullivan</strong> System Vice President<br />
and <strong>Sullivan</strong> System President. Dr. Coppock has had a part<br />
in <strong>Sullivan</strong> changing its name from <strong>Sullivan</strong> Junior College<br />
of Business to <strong>Sullivan</strong> College and now to <strong>Sullivan</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong>. He has also been a part of the institution’s move<br />
to regional accreditation with the Southern Association of<br />
Colleges and Schools in 1979 and from being a two to four<br />
year to master’s to doctoral degree granting institution.<br />
Dr. Coppock is originally from Knoxville, Tennessee and<br />
is a graduate of the <strong>University</strong> of Tennessee. He worked his<br />
way through college loading freight and worked his way<br />
through his doctoral program by working for Shell Oil<br />
Company bulk plant, loading tanker trucks and pumping<br />
barges. These years of manual labor have enabled Dr.<br />
Coppock to appreciate hard work and the value of the<br />
education he has earned.
His Doctoral dissertation studied why college students<br />
graduate from or drop out of college; Dr. C (as he is referred<br />
to by colleagues) had a personal interest in the topic, having<br />
transferred three times during his undergraduate education<br />
and having dropped from his doctoral program once. He has<br />
studied in-depth the personality factors that relate in<br />
persistence in college attendance.<br />
Dr. Coppock has served 12 years on the Governor -<br />
appointed Kentucky State Board for Proprietary Education<br />
and chaired that Board for 3 years; he has served on and<br />
chaired numerous accreditation committees for the<br />
Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of<br />
Colleges and Schools.<br />
He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from <strong>Sullivan</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong> during the Fall 2009 <strong>Commencement</strong> Ceremony<br />
for his distinguished service and accomplishments.<br />
Chancellor A.R. <strong>Sullivan</strong> heralded Dr. Coppock as “a friend<br />
and colleague to hundreds of <strong>Sullivan</strong> faculty and staff ” who<br />
had an “extremely open approach to dealing with his<br />
colleagues and students”. As a testament to his character and<br />
the <strong>University</strong>’s profound admiration he received a standing<br />
ovation.<br />
He has been President of two Optimist International clubs,<br />
has been a Scout Master (and Eagle Scout), has coached little<br />
league football and basketball teams and is active in his<br />
church. Dr. Coppock is married to Patsy; they have two sons,<br />
both nuclear engineers. In his retirement, he teaches online<br />
classes for <strong>Sullivan</strong> <strong>University</strong> and has established a higher<br />
educational consulting business. In his spare time, he travels<br />
with Patsy to visit family in Arizona and Tennessee and<br />
pursues his hobby of working on antique cars and street rods.

ACADEMIC ATTIRE<br />
As early as the twelfth century the first modern colleges and universities, at Bologna<br />
and Paris, were the centers of European learning. The usual garb of the time, for both churchmen<br />
and laymen, was a long gown necessary for warmth in the unheated buildings of the<br />
day. Scholars, generally members of church orders, wore such robes, as well as hoods to<br />
protect their shaved heads. Later, skull caps were worn on the head, and the hood became<br />
a cape that could be pulled over the head in unpleasant weather. The hood was also sometimes<br />
used to collect alms from the more affluent members of the community. As more<br />
colleges and universities were founded, distinctive forms of the gown and hood were adopted<br />
by their faculties. Variations indicated various ranks within the institutions. Strict rules were<br />
published, and sometimes tailors who departed from the authorized design were punished.<br />
The academic hat was a later development adapted from the headdress of the ordinary<br />
people. Academically was it was originally worn as a symbol of the master’s degree and<br />
existed in various forms: some were round, some were square, and some had a tuft in the<br />
center. The flat, square “mortar board” of today originated in Oxford.<br />
Academic costume came to America in 1754 with the founding of King’s College,<br />
now Columbia <strong>University</strong>. Styles became quite varied, as they were in Europe, but in 1895<br />
a group of American college and university representatives met to establish a uniform system<br />
of academic apparel for this country. This led to the establishment in 1902 of an “Intercollegiate<br />
Code of Academic Costume.” The American Council on Education formed a<br />
committee in 1932 to review the 1895 code, and it was again reviewed and revised in 1960.<br />
There are today three basic types of gowns and hoods. The associate and bachelor’s<br />
gowns have pointed sleeves and are designed to be worn closed. The master’s gown is designed<br />
with an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist, and with an arc cut away at the front of the<br />
sleeve. It may be worn either open or closed. The doctoral gown is a full design with voluminous<br />
sleeves, and it also may be worn open or closed. Unlike the other two, the doctoral<br />
gown is faced down the front with velvet and has three velvet bars on the sleeves. These<br />
may be black or of a color related to the subject of the degree.<br />
Of particular interest may<br />
be the colors associated with<br />
each academic program. Arts<br />
and humanities may use white,<br />
business degrees may be light<br />
brown, education uses light<br />
blue, and science, a golden yellow.<br />
The hoods worn by those<br />
who hold the bachelor’s,<br />
master’s, and doctoral degrees<br />
are lined with the official color<br />
of the institution awarding the<br />
degree. The binding or edging of<br />
the hood is of silk or velvet in<br />
the color pertaining to the subject<br />
area. Doctoral hoods are<br />
longer and somewhat fuller,<br />
with the colors of the lining being<br />
those of the institution granting<br />
the degree. It is considered<br />
an honor for one to earn an academic<br />
credential that allows one<br />
to wear their appropiate academic<br />
attire.
