Document Number 2620002GCode Identification 0WY55WSR-88D ROCTBDDUAL POL - DRAFT1 SCOPE1.1 IdentificationThis document defines the interface between the Radar Data Acquisition (RDA) and Radar ProductGeneration (RPG) functional areas of the WSR-88D system. This document revision is applicable tothe RDA design employing client/server technology and to the RPG design employing client/servertechnology. This new RDA design is more commonly called the Open RDA (ORDA). This new RPGdesign is more commonly called the Open RPG (ORPG).1.2 SecurityThe RDA and RPG subnets are mission critical networks. No firewall will be used between thesetrusted systems; however, access control will be employed. The services allowed would includeNetwork Time Protocol (NTP), radar data, Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP), and MasterSystem Control Function (MSCF) display data, all other services shall be denied.1.3 System OverviewThe WSR-88D acquires, generates, and distributes Doppler radar products for meteorological andhydrological applications. Specifically, the RDA functional area acquires radar data; controlsantenna, transmitter, and receiver electronics; prepares radar data in a digital format; transmitsradar data and status to the RPG; and processes control information from the RPG. The RPGfunctional area receives radar data and status information from the RDA, formats and sends controlcommands to the RDA, generates radar products, and distributes radar products for graphical andalphanumeric display systems. The WSR-88D system was developed in the mid to late 1980s. Full scale deployment began in 1992and was completed in 1995. DoD, DoC, and DoT jointly sponsored the development, acquisition, anddeployment of the WSR-88D. There are 158 operating sites which include the RDA and RPGfunctional areas.1.4 Documentation OverviewThis document provides information needed to interface either the RDA or the RPG functional areasof the WSR-88D. Contents include detailed description of the interface components includinghardware and software parameters. The document is structured to address applicable layers of theOpen System Interconnect (OSI) model and Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) communications reference models.Section 1 provides information regarding the identification, scope, purpose, and organization of thisdocument.Section 2 provides information about documentation relevant to this ICD, including applicable andinformative documents.Section 3 provides a description of the Application Layer.Appendix A provides a list of acronyms included in this document.Appendix B provides a definition of the units and symbology used in this document.Appendix C provides Volume Coverage Patterns.1-1
