APPENDIX C - Adult and paediatric Glasgow Coma ScalePaediatric Glasgow Coma ScaleThe paediatric version of the Glasgow Coma Scale ismodifi ed from the Adult Glasgow Coma Scale to take intoaccount of problems assessing the Best Verbal Response inpre-verbal patients.It is composed of three parameters: Best Eye Response,Best Verbal Response and Best Motor Response. Thedefi nition of these parameters is given below.Best Eye Response (4)4. Eyes open spontaneously3. Eye opening to verbal commandCommunication with the infant or child’s caregivers isrequired to establish the best usual verbal response. A‘grimace’ alternative to verbal responses should be usedin pre-verbal or intubated patients.Best Grimace Response (5)5. Spontaneous normal facial/oro-motor activity4.
