1Data overviewCHAPTER 1 - Data overviewHospital participationAn organisational questionnaire was completed for 183/218(83.9%) hospitals, that were expected to participate.Patient identifier spreadsheetsA patient identifi er spreadsheet was returned for 180/218(82.6%) hospitals that were expected to participate. In totalthis equated to 2203 patients, for which <strong>NCEPOD</strong> received1735 (78.8%) sets of casenotes to calculate an injury severityscore (ISS). Of these 909 cases had an ISS less than 16 and826 patients had an ISS ≥ 16, 31 of which were excludedas they were either dead on arrival, had complications of aprevious injury or there was insuffi cient information for theadvisors to assess any aspect of the patient’s care. Theremaining 795 patients were included in the study sample.Clinician questionnairesThe study was designed such that the overwhelming majorityof the quantitative and qualitative data could be obtaineddirectly from the casenotes and the focussed opinionsof the advisors’ (i.e. from the advisor assessment form).To supplement this, the clinician responsible for the initialresuscitation of the patient and the admitting consultant(if applicable) were asked to complete a patient carequestionnaire. In total 513 A&E clinician questionnaires and432 admitting consultant questionnaires were returned.Age and genderSeventy fi ve percent (594/795) of the patients were males,and the mean age of the whole sample was 39.6 years. Themode age of the study sample was 18; one in six (128/795)patients being 16 – 20 years old (Figure 1).Figure 1.
