Frank McDonald “Stress Management – Awareness and Coping Strategies”Managing WorryOne of the worst things about worry is the way it seems tocompletely take over a person's life. It can paralyse thinking andactivity. Nobody likes to lose one’s sense of control. Sounderstandably most habitual worriers would like to be completelyrid of their anxiety. They are often overwhelmed by it or they'worry about worry', fearing that it will lead to something worse. Yet trying toquickly and totally eliminate habits of worry that go back many years isunrealistic. The trick with worry is to lower your sights and aim to manage it.A combination of the following strategies will work better than relying on justone or two. The more you practice them, the stronger your sense of control overworry.I know I willfeel anxious but… I can copeCoping with Worrying ThoughtsSee the cut-out below. Keep it in your wallet or purse. Rehearse the selfstatementsuntil they become an automatic response to worry. Again, the goal isto manage rather than master worry - to accept a certain degree of anxiety aftertaking steps to reduce, rather than eliminate it. So, at worst, your experience ofworry is difficult or unpleasant but not immobilising. (Anyone can cope with'difficult or unpleasant'.) It is more likely though that you will experience fewerand shorter episodes of worry.-----------------------------------------------------------------------COPING WITH WORRYING THOUGHTSMany stress-producing thoughts or images startautomatically in your head but they do not keep goingautomatically. You have a choice in the matter. Worry is a useless andstress-producing exercise. Nothing has ever changedas a result of worrying about it.As soon as you catch yourself beginning to dwellunnecessarily on stressful thoughts, fantasies orpictures read the following words and follow your owninstructions.37“I know I will feel anxious when I think about future badevents, but I can cope with feeling anxious and I don’thave to exaggerate it by dwelling on those thoughts.I can take constructive steps to prepare for comingevents and that’s as much as anyone can do.Now I will think of something else or do somethingactive to fill my mind.I can even choose to act in some way that is in directconflict with my worry. That will convince me of thefolly of my unrealistic fears in the most compelling wayof all - by facing them. That way I will find they were notwhat I imagined.I'll learn through experience that with effective thoughtand actions, I can cope.”
