Principal’s Letter Cover Story Spotlight StudentsDong earns Stephen T. Badin medal forClass of 2011When people think of the Class of 2011 at BadinHigh School, the name of Raymond Dong will be amemorable one.Dong earned the Stephen T. Badin Medal as themost outstanding member of the senior class. Theaward capped an impressive career for Dong, the covaledictorianwho is now a freshman at the Universityof Chicago, majoring in pre-med.“Raymond really made his presence felt in the Classof 2011,’’ outgoing BHS principal Frank Margello.“He was a tremendous student, active in the schoolcommunity, athletics, graduate-level research – youname it, Raymond did it. He truly earned this award.”Other graduation medal winners included:• Brianna Listermann, the Archbishop Altermedal, honoring the highest contribution to faithlife. Listermann is attending Miami UniversityHamilton and majoring in pre-nursing.• Britney McGraw, the Archbishop Leibold medal,honoring the highest level of service to the schooland the community. She is attending the OhioState University and majoring in business.• Jimin Seo, the Archbishop McNicholas medal,honoring the highest level of academicachievement. Seo, from South Korea, was anInternational student who attended Badin forfour years while living with her aunt and uncle inOxford. She joined Dong as the co-valedictorian,despite taking classes in what is not her nativelanguage. She is attending the University ofSouthern California and majoring in pre-med.“These medals are a great graduation night honor,’’Margello said, “but we look at them as both rewardand motivation – reward for what the students haveaccomplished at Badin, and motivation to do thatmuch more going forward. This is just the start ofmany good things for these four students.”Graduation for the 117 members of the Class of2011 took place on Friday, June 3, at St. MaximilianKolbe Church in Liberty Township. Dr. Jim Rigg, thesuperintendent for schools in the Archdiocese ofCincinnati, was the keynote speaker.Left to right, at top, are Britney McGraw, RaymondDong, Jimin Seo, and Brianna Listermann.14

From left are Joe Marot, the St. Michael’sScholarship and Service book award; Bethany Fuhrman, the Brown University book award for excellence inEnglish; Principal Frank Margello; Serena Murrell, the University of Notre Dame book award for achievement;Jessica Schellenbach, the St. Michael’s Scholarship and Service book award; and Colin Martin, the Bausch & Lombaward for science.Austin SandorGCL Golfer of the Year(Photo courtesy of The JournalNews)$100,000 ClubTwenty members of the Class of 2011 were honored at theannual Academic Signing Day in May for accumulating morethan $100,000 in college academic scholarships.Austin Sandor ’12 was named the GCL Golfer of the Year andlater earned a trip to the state tournament as an individual.Badin golfers advanced through the sectionals as a team andcaptured the GCL team title as well.15
