Forth Valley Formulary Eleventh Edition 2012/13Appendix 7TramadolIf co-codamol 30/500 + adjuvant drug therapies are ineffective or side-effects are nottolerated, tramadol could be considered. Tramadol should not be co-prescribedwith co-codamol and should not be considered as first line therapy.Tramadol is licensed for moderate to severe pain and is approximately twice aspotent as codeine (3) . It is promoted as between WHO step 2 analgesics for moderatepain (eg codeine) and WHO step 3 analgesics (morphine) BUT there is no evidenceof improved efficacy of safety over other drugs at step 2.
