NEWSLETTER - JAYHAWK WING, COMMEMORATIVE AIR FORCE
Volume 13, Issue 10 OCTOBER 2009
“FIFI”
As many of you already know, Sept. 6th was a very
special day for the CAF, the B-29/B-24 Squadron, the
“FIFI” reengine committee and myself. At 8:00 am on
a beautiful West Texas Sunday morning, we rolled
“FIFI” out of the hangar and I started her #3 engine for
the first time on the airplane, with her full size
propeller. She started smooth and without incident. I
ran her for about 10 minutes to warm her up, did a few
initial checks and shut her down for a leak check. 2nd
start was John Schauer’s turn and he also had a nice
smooth start. As we powered up under Charlie
Tilghman’s direction, Nelson Ezell, who was also on
the Flt. Deck noticed right away that a change needed
to be made on the prop low pitch stop.
As I write this the planes are being readied for the Midland AirSho. Fueling them, polishing and
washing! We want our babies to look good for the show which means they have to avoid all bugs
between here and there.
John Bartholomew is pulling the PX trailer and taking a RV full of people to the Show. Both planes
are full and there are some members driving the scenic route.
Joe Roth is still working on the electrical material list with the actual work probably to be done after the first of the
year. He seems to think a wedding at the end of October should take precedence of installing outlets!
The Staff is starting to work on Awards to be presented at the Christmas Party. If you think someone has done a
bang up job this year, please send me their name and why they should get an award.
I am bugging Nick Mardis about the restrooms. He is getting with the plumber to find out exactly what part of the
work the Wing can do so we can hopefully save some money. We are moving at the speed of a snail but one of
these days we will have indoor plumbing! I can hear the women cheering!
Our Fly Day is coming Oct 18. Pray for good weather! Please read Bev’s column for pertinent information. She is
also at work on the Salute to Valor publicity piece and hopes to have it ready soon so we can start the ticket sales.
Also now is a good time to start getting those Silent Auction items donated.
FINANCE OFFICER
Col Mary Green
As I write this, many of us are heading for the BIG CAF air show in Midland and are hoping that
our PX sales are great!!
The financial status of the wing is solid, at this time- we had awesome PX sales at the Wichita
Flight Festival in August, and we really need another “success story” in Midland as we have lots of
bills that come due before the end of the year- with ANUAC, air meet insurance, insurance on the
hangar and 2 planes all coming due with a total of approx. $8,000.00. Luckily, we have the money
to pay the bills, but with the Wing now moving forward to construct the restrooms, we need to find new avenues of
revenue.
Our PT 23 has been “flying its heart out” all summer and our Gift Certificate Program has really paid off. The PT
is paying its way!!! Now we just need to find a way to get the UC 78 to be financially productive.
You’ll be hearing more from Staff at the upcoming meeting regarding the plans for the restrooms and “time line” to
get this done. The restrooms are going to be an EXPENSIVE but much needed addition to the hangar. We’re
looking at approx. $20,000 to get everything done.
Please come to the next meeting- Monday night, October 12, 2009 and give your input and ideas about raising
money to accomplish getting the restrooms completed.
We need EVERYONES help in order to help the Wing to stay financially strong.
We’re all volunteers and we ALL have a stake in helping the Wing to survive and grow.
The Cessna UC-78 annual inspection is complete! It is planned to take it to Midland on October 9
and return on October 12. We need to promote it more and get it out for display and give some
rides it.
The Fairchild PT-23 has given several rides this last month. Thanks to Earl the airplane is running
very well. It is planned to take it to Midland on October 9 and return on October 12, also. Let’s
make sure we thank Earl for all the maintenance, and Mike Flynn and Joe Roth for giving rides. Both airplanes
have been requested to fly over gatherings on November 7th, for the Wichita Veterans Day Parade and the Valley
Center Fall Festival. We will try our best to accommodate them. Let folks know about rides and we will be able to
give even more. You never know until you ask!!!
PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER
Col Bev Brady
The Wing Fall Fly Day and Cookout is set for October 18. As always, we’ll start flying around 1:00
p.m. so come out to the hangar and enjoy an afternoon of mingling with Jayhawk Wing members,
families and guests, and take a ride in an airplane (free for members). We’ll fire up the grill to cook
some burgers and dogs so we can eat around 5:00 p.m.
Please bring appetizers, side dishes or desserts to share, and your own beverages, adult or
otherwise. The Wing will furnish the burgers, hot dogs, buns, condiments and table service. You’ll be asked for a
small donation ($3.00 - $4.00 per person) to cover the costs.
Plans are in the works for the Wing’s Christmas party, too. We’re checking with Savute’s to see if they will be
willing to host us again this year as they have been doing for so many years. The tentative date is Tuesday,
December 8. I know that everyone’s social calendars start filling up fast for the holiday season, so save that date
for the Wing’s Christmas Party (and announcement of new officers). We’ll get updated information to you soon.
We have received all the merchandise for the Midland AirSho. Margaret and I marked it with a
little help from Phyllis, Earl who as an Engineer, fixed the Pricing Gun with supervision from Chuck
Harley.
I am sorry that I am not going to be able to make trip this year but know all of you will have fun and
sell the heck out of the merchandise.
VETERANS LECTURESHIP
Col John Wendinger
The newest project of the Jayhawk Wing, The Veterans Lectureship, has been busy. In August
the Team was invited to Friendship Club at the West Side Church Of God to present our program.
The folks were most friendly and really enjoyed the program.
The lunch they served was fantastic and the guys said it was better than being paid. The club
made a generous donation, as did many members who fed the donation basket. Dr. Lew Smith and Mr. Al Murphy
both gave excellent accounts of their experiences.
On Sept. 29 the team answered an invitation from The South Central Christian Men's Assn. to bring our program
to their meeting. After another excellent dinner, (if we did more of these we all would get fat) Dr. Lew Smith and
Col Chuck Chauncey presented their experiences from their part of the War. Again the guy's were well received,
before the dinner when the members had time to speak with them at the display tables, and after with more
questions. The club made a generous donation and again so did some members who hit the donation basket.
I believe this program will be big for our Wing, The exposure this gives us leads to more visits by the Team in front
of more people. We should all keep this in mind as we talk with people at our clubs, churches, or other groups we
are members of, seeing where or when they need a speaker or a program at one of their events. The speakers are
not the only ones getting questions. As the moderator, I get the questions about the CAF and the Jayhawk Wing,
making us familiar with many new people. If you would like to get involved with VLS let Col Herb Duncan or Col
John Wendinger know.
Just a quick note to ask a BIG favor of the pilots and wing members. The hangar is our home now so we
need to really go out of our way to keep it looking the best it can be.
If you see oil on the floor… please take a minute and clean it up. If you see any trash anywhere, please pick
it up and dispose of it in the right way. If you see the weeds around the building getting out of hand or
unsightly… get a string trimmer from somewhere and trim things up. Col John Riggs and Col Earl Long
have been very faithful about keeping the grass cut. Thanks guys!!!
Let’s make the outside of the hangar something to have pride in because it’s the first thing people see when
they come to the hangar. PLEASE……..Keep the chairs and tables in order and if you get it out, put it back!!
The last one to leave the hangar should make sure the south door, hangar door and north entry door are
secured and locked. We wouldn’t want to have anything happen just because someone forgot to lock the
place up!!! And as always, make sure the computer, printer, speaker system and lights are all turned off.
Let’s Have Fun…
“FIFI”…
We shut down and proceeded to remove the prop dome to make the adjustment. About an hour later, we were
ready to start again. With John at the controls, we increased power slowly while taking all the temp. and press.
readings. When we reached take off power, we hit the numbers just as it was originally predicted! We are making
2000 HP at 2400 rpm with 44” of MAP. My sincere thanks to all that came out and those that have been involved
from the beginning. As much as it sounds like we are done with the #3 engine, nothing could be further from the
truth. Since the run, we had to remove the cowling, exhaust and prop to finish work on the cowling and exhaust.
We also had to remove the carburetor and send it back to the vendor for some minor adjustments that they can
only make on a flow bench. As I’m writing this, the cowling is back on, the prop will go back on this week and the
Rt. wing section that has been off the airplane for 1& 1/2 years will be here Tuesday morning. A lot to do but we’ll
have it back together for AirSho and continue working in preparation for the next engine.
How Can You Help?
How to make a financial contribution to “FIFI”!
This is a question that gets asked frequently, that most members do not know how to answer, however here is the
answer.
Option #1
Call the CAF Headquarters toll free number: 1-877-767-7175 ext. 2230, Mon-Fri. This contact is for the CAF
Controller, Lindsey Pena. Lindsey can take your credit card contribution, or explain how you can contribute to the
B-29 project (see option #2 below). Your financial contribution goes directly to “FIFI”, again, your financial
contribution goes directly to her.
Option #2:
Write and send a check payable to the Commemorative Air Force and please write the aircraft FAA registration
number in the “note area” i.e.: For the B-29 “FIFI” write N-529B.
Mail to:
