Why these accusations of abuse were religious persecutionWe have sometimes been asked, “Why do you claim that this is ‘religious persecution’ when thecharges against you have nothing to do with religion?” While it’s true that the actual charges levelledagainst our members usually have little to do with religion per se, we can look at this questionas follows:Most states guarantee religious freedom. It would be difficult for any democratic state to knockdown the doors of a religious group on the basis that they do not like their religion. Therefore apretext is needed. In our case, the pretext was alleged abuse. If the issue about our movement wasgenuine concern for our children, then the courts have answered this. Nearly 700 of our childrenhave been examined.
